Maybe a bit off topic, but...
I spoke with someone recently who expressed concern about algorithms relating to self-driving cars, not just laws. When start having computers written to decide who gets a fine, for instance, self-driving cars will have safety algorithms which, depending on how a crash goes, are likely to have to decide at some point who stays safe and who doesn't in an inevitable crash.

So, what are the limits of computer code in these situations?

Yessiree, the time AT&T spent ten years giving people speeds just barely fast enough that they wouldn't tear the cable out of the wall then tear the executives in two for charging $75/mo, oh those were the good years. Golden years! Wish we had'em back yessirree.

We had about 7-9Mbps up in Andersonville when I was living there last year and it was adequate, but could have been better. The upstream was awful, though.

It is 2013, we should demand better for all the money we pay to these yahoos.

it's not just that. The rare earths in China don't have to be refined as much as the stuff found pretty much everywhere else on earth. I don't remember the term, but a metallurgist friend explained it to me once, saying that hands down China is at the front of the pack because of this.

So, I'd be interested to know if the rare earths (and I know, there are many substances under that umbrella) found here are of a similar purity to the ones in China or the ones in the States.

I eat paleo at work unless we're treated to lunch. Even then , go for mostly meat and veggies.

Also, isometrics. Tense muscles *as hard as possible* for 10-20 seconds. Do that a couple times and hour every other day or so and I have to say it's not too bad, seemingly. Then I go home and get some exercise in a few times a week, yoga a couple times a week. Maybe hiking or walking, something slow and steady, on weekends ideally.

I love all that junk food, but I guess I like being in shape more. Also, cutting out the crud seems to keep my energy up. I can't imagine being strung out on coffee and sugary stuff all the time. Since I went mostly paleo about a year ago I'm less moody, which is great.

Good luck!

Another person from LA here to speak up. It's total bullshit up in the hills here near La Canada. You either get DSL (in a major metropolitan area! and it STILL goes out regularly!) or you get the most unreliable, pricey, crappy AT&T cable you can imagine.
I thought moving from Chicago things would be better, but it just blows. I want to cockpunch (and I mean stretch the thing out, lay it on a slab, and punch it) repeatedly the moneygrubbers on this one. Actually, fact might be it's the investors doing it. More profit! It must be good because more profit! Hard to say, but a bunch of people deserve a swift kick in the softies for this travesty they call internet service.

It was REALLY bad 5 years ago, and it's only going to get worse unless we (say it with me) INVEST MONEY IN IT.

It SHOULD be (imo), but it's been used to simply get people to make more stuff so far. There's a huge body of literature about this going back the last couple hundred years. I suggest starting with "How to Be Idle", it gives a good overview on the subject, is a fun read, and points one in some good directions on where humanity may have gone wrong in our drive to Be Really Busy.
