Submission + - Google's 'Overpromising' Led To Stadia 'Disappointment,' Says RDR2 Publisher (arstechnica.com)

An anonymous reader writes: A year ago, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said he was "pretty optimistic" about Google's Stadia game-streaming service. The concept of "being able to play our games on any device whatsoever around the world, and to do it with low latency, well that’s very compelling if that can be delivered," he offered in May of 2019. Now, though, Zelnick has changed his tune a bit. In an interview given during the Bernstein Annual Strategic Decisions Conference late last week, Zelnick acknowledges what has been apparent to industry watchers for a while: "The launch of Stadia has been slow," he said. "I think there was some overpromising on what the technology could deliver and some consumer disappointment as a result."

While major publishers like EA and Activision stayed away from Stadia's "Founders" launch last November, Take-Two provided three of the service's highest-profile games in its early months—Red Dead Redemption 2, NBA 2K20, and Borderlands 3. And Zelnick said such Stadia support will continue in the future "as long as the business model makes sense." (Take-Two's PGA Tour 2K21, WWE2K Battlegrounds, and the Mafia series are currently planned for future Stadia release.) That said, Zelnick was pretty bearish on how much of an impact the streaming business model will really have on Take-Two's bottom-line sales. "It's not a game changer," Zelnick said. "People who want our games now can get our games now. The fact that you could stream them and not have to have a console interface is really not that big of a deal."

Submission + - SPAM: Tim Cook, Ginni Rometty to Launch Workforce Ad Campaign for White House in June

theodp writes: Back in 2018, The American Workforce Policy Advisory Board — whose members include Apple CEO Tim Cook and IBM Executive Chairman Ginni Rometty — was given a mission by the White House: "Ensure all Americans can benefit from the nation’s historic economic boom and record low employment rates." But as a working group led by Rometty and Cook readied the launch of a private sector-led national campaign on the unprecedented opportunity to experience the American Dream, a funny thing happened to the economy.

"As everyone knows," explained co-chair Ivanka Trump at the Advisory Board's first post-COVID-19 outbreak meeting (YouTube, audio-only) on May 19th, "the last time this board convened just a few short months ago, job vacancies exceeded the number of unemployed Americans for many, many consecutive months and the first time in history, and the mission of the board was to help more people come off the sidelines and get connected with the skills that would could enable them to secure a career in the thriving economy. Now the challenge is different — it's reconnecting workers with the workforce, but it's more critical than ever." So, what about that ad campaign? "All the work was just about ready to roll," explained IBM's Rometty, "but we did feel the campaign had to be changed to reflect the new reality of the world." Apple's Cook concurred: "I agree with Ginni on the need for this new ad and the website direction. People really need help now and this campaign can help provide that. Our overarching goal is to broadcast out a tone and message of hope and action that is relevant to any individuals whose job or career plans were suddenly upended by the health crisis. We want it to be simple and straightforward and provide useful resources (Vimeo) that help immediately in the current environment."

Rometty added that the new campaign would launch mid-June with a tagline that "will be something in the spirit of 'Find Something New' or 'You've Got Options.'"

An anonymous reader writes: Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison told "Fox News Sunday" he has evidence that people from out-of-state were involved in violent behavior in Minneapolis, but he did not specify whether they were affiliated with any particular group or ideology.

A resolution to designate Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization was introduced in the Senate in 2019, stating that Antifa "represents opposition to the democratic ideals of peaceful assembly and free speech for all[.]"

Submission + - SPAM: Any Doubt that Tim Berners-Lee Deserves a Presidential Medal of Freedom? 1

theodp writes: Talking last week to homebound students about the pandemic, Bill Gates with remarkable understatement made the observation that "the internet is helping reduce the pain a little bit." Ya think? Even Verizon, AT&T, and Comcast recognize that people can't afford to lose connectivity during the coronavirus lockdown. So, hopefully Tim Berners-Lee will be included among the crowd of worthy Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients once things are under control. After all, it is long overdue — Queen Elizabeth recognized the importance of TBL's contribution way back in 2003.

Submission + - SPAM: USGS releases first complete geologic map of the Moon

schwit1 writes: Have you ever wanted to study the Moons surface in exacting detail? Nows your chance. The USGS (with help from NASA and the Lunar Planetary Institute) has released the first complete geologic map of the Moon, providing a truly comprehensive look at our nearest cosmic neighbor. The 1:5,000,000 scale map is color-coded to help you quickly identify geological features, including multiple crater types, plains and other features.

The team created the map using a mix of Apollo-era maps and data from recent satellite missions, including the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and Japans SELENE. Scientists redrew the historical maps to help them line up with the present-day sets while preserving valuable notes. They also established consistent descriptions of features to prevent the confusion that could happen with past maps.

Submission + - Microsoft Is Bombarding Chrome-Using Outlook.com Visitors With Ads For Edge (betanews.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Microsoft is no stranger to hitting its customers with ads for its products and services, and it seems that the company is so keen that people make the switch to the new Chromium-based version of Edge that it is now bombarding Outlook.com users with banner ads. The ads are targeting people who visit the web-based version of Outlook using Google Chrome, and they see Microsoft extolling the speed and performance of its most recent web browser.

As spotted by Windows Latest a series of ads appear at the top of Outlook.com encouraging people to try out Microsoft Edge. In the ads, Microsoft claims that Edge brings "the best of the web," makes "Outlook more accessible," and boosts "speed, performance and compatibility." The good news about the latest batch of ads from Microsoft is that they are not terribly persistent. While there are a number of different banner ads which are displayed in rotation after a refresh or on each new visit to Outlook.com, once they have been dismissed they do not seem to make a reappearance.

Submission + - Planet of the Humans (produced by Michael Moore) promotes Conspiracy Theorist (blogspot.com)

retroworks writes: Having watched Planet of the Humans twice over the weekend (thanks to a story from Slashdot) , I was rather impressed as a professional environmentalist. I agreed in large part that the extreme danger posed by species extinction, climate change, ocean and forest resource depletion, etc., has been cranked up to 11, and that too many NGO initiatives (solar panels at Earth Day concerts, bio fuel wood chips, etc) do more to provide society "moral licensing" than true hope. My initial qualm with the documentary was based on Moore's tendency to always end on a "blame the rich". It was corporations after all that cleaned 1950s junk cars out of USA rivers (for profit scrap recycling industry), not hippies and PIRG volunteers.

The documentary takes huges swipes at environmental NGO sector (especially my hometown Middlebury College's Bill McKibben and 350.org ), and makes very valid arguments that non-profits might be selling out when it comes to supporting wood fuel biomass in return for donations from Koch Foundation and the like. The documentary is a little unfair to solar on balance (conservation isn't perfect, but it's not the enemy of the good either), but dialectic is healthy. And the part about hard rock mining in the rain forests and coral reefs is worth watching over and over.

Today I was researching Dr. Vandala Shiva, who is promoted in Planet of the Humans as a kind of truth-telling environmentalist. She appears at one point to be the one honest broker in the whole lot, according to director Gibbs. So looking her up, and lo and behold, here she is granting a rather recent interview on Youtube, https://youtu.be/9KxAVh_oNF0?t...">explaining that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's vaccine program is actually a plot to inject microchips into African women, to "remotely control" their reproductive cycles. And her accusations against the Gates's goes even farther downhill from there.

Seriously? Either Moore and Gibbs failed to do their own background research, or they knew this and chose not to disclose it. Either one is an "own goal" against the environmental movement IMO. We can't win a war against the holocene with discredited sources and information. If they are going to take down the other environmentalists, they should have a seaworthy idea with which to replace them.

Submission + - Microsoft Teases Revamped Start Menu For Windows 10 (theredmondcloud.com) 1

Ammalgam writes: Microsoft is planning to substantially refresh visual elements of Windows 10.

One of the upcoming feature updates for Windows 10 will introduce a Start Menu redesign.

Microsoft recently showed off a clip on the official Microsoft Design Twitter account that highlights the evolution of the Windows 10 Start Menu from the very beginning.

The interesting part about the clip is that it apparently shows the coming evolution of the Start Menu.

Some notable changes include a wider application listing and changes to tiles such as the omission of titles for medium sized ones.

Submission + - The Ongoing Signal Intelligence Feeding Frenzy (theamericanconservative.com)

Nicola Hahn writes: The COVID-19 outbreak has presented an incredible opportunity for data aggregators of all stripes as daily interaction migrates to the cloud. If this becomes the new normal, as Robert Cringely has predicted, it will result in a historic realignment of power between the tech companies and individual citizens. Leading to unsettling implications for history's downward arc:

"Common sense dictates that relying on technology that’s developed in a police state like China is inherently risky. The instinctive response for many users is to turn to American technology. However, thanks to whistleblowers like Edward Snowden the public record shows that domestic companies are also cooperating with the intelligence community as well as monetizing their access to user data. So if you’re wondering whether a particular online platform is secure, you’re asking the wrong question. The salient question is which group of security services and big data aggregators have access?"

Submission + - SPAM: Firefox 75 Arrives With Revamped Address Bar, Mozilla Sticks To 2020 Schedule

According to Mozilla, Firefox has about 250 million active users, making it a major platform for web developers to consider.

When the coronavirus crisis took hold, millions found themselves spending more time in their browsers as they learn and work from home. But the crisis is also impacting software developers. Google was forced to pause its Chrome releases, which typically arrive every six weeks. Ultimately, Chrome 81 was delayed, Chrome 82 is being skipped altogether, and Chrome 83 has been moved up a few weeks. Microsoft has followed suit with Edge’s release schedule, consistent with Google’s open source Chromium project, which both Chrome and Edge are based on. Mozilla wants to make clear it is not in the same boat. The company took an indirect jab at Google and Microsoft today, saying: “We’ve built empathy into our systems for handling difficult or unexpected circumstances. These strengths are what allow us to continue to make progress where some of our competitors have had to slow down or stop work.”
