Submission + - 12-inch Miracle Tube Could Halve Heating Bills (dailymail.co.uk)

Nullav writes:
It sounds too good to be true — not to mention the fact that it violates almost every known law of physics.
But British scientists claim they have invented a revolutionary device that seems to 'create' energy from virtually nothing.
The device seems to break the fundamental physical law that energy cannot be created from nothing — but researchers believe it taps into a previously unrecognized source of energy, stored at a sub-atomic level within the hydrogen atoms in water.
If the technology can be developed on a domestic scale, it means consumers will need much less energy for heating and hot water — creating smaller bills and fewer greenhouse gases.

Submission + - DDR3 Memory Round-Up, Gaining In Performance (hothardware.com)

MojoKid writes: "It's only four months after the launch of Intel's P35 chipset — the first desktop chipset to support DDR3 memory — and already the market is rife with high-end DDR3 memory kits that dramatically outperform the initial offerings that arrived alongside Intel's new platform. DDR3 memory kits are still substantially more expensive than even some of the fastest DDR2 kits but with the amount of innovation going on in this space, it's interesting to see just how far DDR3 system memory has come. This HotHardware look at five different 2Gig kits from Corsair, Kingston, OCZ and SuperTalent shows that performance and overall bandwidth has improved significantly now that latency is coming down and clock speeds continue to rise for DDR3."

The Medion systems contained a boot virus known as Stoned.Angelina. The virus stores itself in the DOS boot sector of floppy disks and in the master boot record on hard disks.

The company said in a notice on its Danish website that the infected machines had been sold through Aldi retail stores in the country.

Once an investment is made it can be very expensive to switch. Among the reasons: overall value proposition, cheaper licensing fees, less help desk calls, less manual patching, and increased worker productivity."

Submission + - Germans reject file-sharing paranoia (arstechnica.com)

athloi writes: "German prosecutors have begun denying requests to force ISPs to identify the subscribers behind IP addresses, saying that the alleged file-sharing was a "petty offense." According to German-language Heise Online, the court said that the labels did not explain how a "criminally relevant damage" could have arisen from the alleged file-sharing. Unlike the US legal system, German law has no provision allowing for civil proceedings to obtain ISP subscriber info.

Mac Worm Author Gets Death Threats 244

StonyandCher write(s) to spread news about the strange story of the reported Apple OS X worm, which is growing stranger by the day. The blog of the researcher who claimed to have created the malware reportedly received death threats. The blog was then hijacked, according to the researcher, who calls him/herself InfoSec Sellout. InfoSec blamed David Maynor for hacking the blog. For his part, Maynor apparently unmasked himself as "LMH" and InfoSec as Jon Ramsey. The post to the Fuzzing mailing list has not been independently confirmed.
Update: 07/19 13:48 GMT by KD : David Maynor wrote in and denies that he is LMH.
