Submission + - Gary Johnson 2012 picking up steam (garyjohnson2012.com)

Elwar123 writes: The push to draft Gary Johnson to run for president in 2012 has picked up some steam in the past month. The site, garyjohnson2012.com, set up as a grassroots effort to draft Gary Johnson has garnered over 6,000 views in the month of October, more than doubling the previous month's views.

As the Internet community starts hearing about the former New Mexico governor, who is known for his fiscal discipline and vetoing over 750 bills during his two terms, they seek out more information. The website comes up #1 on a google search for "Gary Johnson 2012" and #2 after wikipedia on a search just for the name "Gary Johnson".

Considering Governor Johnson has not been in the public spotlight as a possible Republican candidate for 2012, this is a significant start for what could be a repeat of the Internet dominance held by Ron Paul in the 2008 presidential campaign. The website compete.com shows the website charliecrist.com with just over 5,000 views for the last month, this from a candidate who is actively running a Senate campaign.

Submission + - Gary Johnson setting up possible run for 2012 (garyjohnson2012.com)

Elwar123 writes: Former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson has set the initial gears into motion of a 2012 presidential run.
He has set up a 527 PAC called the Our America Initiative to get his views out to the voters and written a book due out in December.

The book, titled "Seven Principles of Good Government" revolves around his political philosophy he used to be the first governor to win twice in a Democrat heavy state.

1. Become reality driven. Don't kid yourself or others. Find out what's what and base your decisions and actions on that.
2. Always be honest and tell the truth. It's extremely difficult to do any damage to anybody when you are willing to tell the truth-regardless of the consequences.
3. Always do what's right and fair. Remember, the more you actually accomplish, the louder your critics become. You've got to learn to ignore your critics. You've got to continue to do what you think is right. You've got to maintain your integrity.
4. Determine your goal, develop a plan to reach that goal, and then act. Don’t procrastinate.
5. Make sure everybody who ought to know what you’re doing knows what you’re doing. Communicate.
6. Don’t hesitate to deliver bad news. There is always time to salvage things. There is always time to fix things. Henry Kissinger said that anything that can be revealed eventually should be revealed immediately.
7. Last, be willing to do whatever it takes to get your job done. If you’ve got a job that you don’t love enough to do what it takes to get your job done, then quit and get one that you do love, and then make a difference.

The website http://www.garyjohnson2012.com/ lists the following accomplishments by Governor Johnson:
*He didn't raise taxes as Governor once.
*He vetoed over 1,000 spending items.
*He cut taxes 14 times.
*In a state dominated 2 to 1 by Democrats, he served 2 terms.
*He competed in the Bataan Memorial Death March, a 25 mile desert run in combat boots wearing a 35 pound backpack.
*He participated in Hawaii's invitation-only Ironman Triathalon Championship, several times.
*He climbed to the top of Mount Everest, despite a broken leg.

Comment iTunes? (Score 2, Funny) 600

Ok, maybe I've completely missed the boat her but...I still don't understand the whole iTunes hystaria... Why pay for proprietary formats of music that you can only play on certain devices? My Palm Pre plays MP3s, why would I want to go out of my way to make it sync up with something that requires me to pay for music? I had the iPhone for a while, I never used the iTunes thing. I never saw any reason, and I could never figure out how to get it to play MP3s. The Palm Pre you just hook up to the computer and drag your MP3s over to the music folder. Plus you can ssh into your Palm Pre and manipulate the Linux files. The only thing I miss from the iPhone is the ease of use of the voicemail. I also get a buttload of free apps on the Pre.

Comment 10 Workers (Score 1) 434

As a defense contractor I can see how something can go for $18 million over 5 years, I've had similar projects along those lines. Figure an average salary of $75k over 5 years gives you 240...but a rule of thumb in the industry is that the salary is actually about a third of what it costs per person...you figure in the equipment cost per person plus overhead, that gives you 80...spread that over 5 years, you have 16 workers for the website. Take about 6 of those workers out and replace them with server cost/network cost/software licenses and that leaves you with a small office of 10 people working on the site from hardware guys keeping the server running to developers and system admins to managers, Human Resources and marketing guys. So in the end...probably 2 web developers, 1 database guy, 1 hardware guy, 1 system admin, 1 HR person, 1 project lead, 1 manager, 1 secretary and one big boss that got the contract and is working on others.

I've been in the same situation you're in. I used to down a slim fast on my way to work and then during lunch drive to the gym for a quick work out and on my way back to the office, down another slim fast. Eat a very light dinner...a small meat and a small side. Drink a LOT of water. Now, with this job I skip the slim fast and bring my own meal to work. I still go to the gym at lunchtime but I eat my lunch at my desk throughout the day.

Comment Gary Johnson is for smart decriminalization (Score 1) 572

I've been following former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson's take on decriminalizing drugs and he has some sound thoughts on the whole matter from a fiscally conservative point of view.

For marijuana, legalize and tax it using the tax funds toward drug rehabilitation and education. Provide prescription access to heroin in ways that have been proven in other countries to cut down on use. For the harder drugs, take them by a case by case basis and approach it in an intelligent, non-kneejerk, manner that addresses the real issues.

There was some talk of him running for president as a Republican in 2012.
