Submission + - FTC Chairwoman Speaks on Growing U.S. Patent Problem (opensource.com)

ectoman writes: In a recent policy speech, Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Edith Ramirez indicated that the FTC might be preparing to seriously address patent abuse in the United States. Mark Bohannon, Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Global Public Policy at Red Hat, has reviewed Ramirez's remarks, calling them "some of the most direct and specific to date from a senior US Government official regarding 'harmful PAE [patent assertion entities] activities.'" Bohannon writes that the FTC's proposed roadmap for patent reform "is both ambitious and doable," and he discusses how the agency could make its potential contributions to reforms most effective. The piece arrives one week after Bohannon analyzed other patent reform efforts currently ongoing in Washington—in a piece Slashdot readers have been discussing.

How does self checkout help? Same jackass talking on his phone halfway through checking out.

You advocate that I take my eyes off the road and hands off the wheel to video tape someone supporting my complaint that he had his eyes off the road and hands off the wheel? That seems wrong somehow.

People do respond to financial incentives, that's why you still have the option to take a job and have more than the minimum that the basic income offers. I suspect most who are able will respond to the financial incentives and take a job.

Note that that job might pay less than it would now since it's just for additional income rather than family survival. It also means that even with most workplace regulations repealed, there will be less dirty tricks by employers since quitting is more of an option.

I don't go to movies anymore, I wait for the DVD.

I prefer to buy groceries at the store so I can see what I'm actually getting. This is particularly true of produce.

There is plenty of research and common sense to back up the idea that if you're looking at your phone and pressing buttons on it, you are not securely holding the steering wheel and watching the road.

As for the youtube thing, if I record them in the movie theater, I *am* part of the problem.

That sounds great! I'll tell the grocery store that they are not paid by me for the food I buy, but by my employers profit. I'm sure they'll understand.

Or perhaps they'll fall back on that old saw that I owe them the money or I can't leave with my groceries. I'll bet they won't let me pay them in cows, chickens, rubles, or my special 'cash card' either.

I can see that as a problem. It's unfortunate that there are enough people being rude that Faraday cages and illegal jammers start to look good to theater managers.

Louisiana passed a shoot the carjacker law to make it clear that lethal defense is acceptable in that situation. Perhaps we need a "spike the cellphone" law to clarify reasonable reactions to rude people in the theater :-)
