How can there be a debate about scientific results? This always confuses me. One can have a debate about moral or ethical issues, but not about scientific results.

Then I would say your understanding of how science works is somewhat limited. We could have a debate about: a) whether the assumptions made at the outset were good assumptions, b) whether the data was collected in a reasonable way, c) whether the statistics were chosen and applied correctly, d) whether you've done a good enough job controlling other variables and excluding competing hypotheses, e) the magnitude and directionality of various sources of error, and whether they could confound the data, etc.

Not saying that these are problems with the study in question, but I've read studies in which each of the above (among other things) were certainly open for debate!

Submission + - Is HP Paying Intel To Keep Itanium Alive? (itworld.com) 1

itwbennett writes: "In a court filing, Oracle accused HP of secretly contracting with Intel to keep making Itanium processors so that it can continue to make money from its locked-in Itanium customers and take business away from Oracle's Sun servers. Oracle says that Intel would have long ago killed off Itanium if not for these payments from HP. For its part, HP called the filing a 'desperate delay tactic' in the lawsuit HP filed against Oracle over its decision to stop developing for Itanium."

Submission + - Tablet with root access by default?

hweimer writes: "I am looking for a small (7") tablet that comes with root access out of the box. I know, I could get one of the usual suspects and root it myself, but I don't want to waste my time in the process and end up voiding my warranty. Basically, I'd like to use it for web browsing, reading PDFs and accessing my e-mails via SSH (extra bonus for X11 forwarding). Any good suggestions, or should I wait for Tizen devices to hit the market?"

I think his name's Moolenar, but I second your thanks to Bram - especially his commitment to the Kibaale Children's Centre. I work at the school in Vancouver, Canada that played an instrumental part in starting KCC, and many of my colleagues have worked there over the years. KCC is still doing fantastic work for the poorest of the poor in Uganda.

Good points - I was thinking along the lines of a VPS where there's no physical access to the console (since that what I generally use for projects like this). I generally keep two to four SSH sessions running, along with my web browser and whatever other software I'd like on the client side (usually a text editor for keeping my cheat-sheet), so I do use a GUI - just not on the server itself.

If you were actually working on the server itself, it would make a lot of sense to have a GUI for exactly the reasons you suggest.

I agree with the suggestion to use Ubuntu, especially due to the massive amount of old forum posts online that will answer most questions. However, installing ubuntu-desktop will certainly give you a GUI, but that GUI won't particularly help you to administer your LAMP stack.

Going completely CLI isn't as bad as you might think - there's a relatively small number of commands you'd need to use. My advice is to find a tutorial or small book on setting up an Ubuntu LAMP server, and then keep a personal "cheat-sheet" of the commands you've been using, because you'll probably want them again at some point. And, on the plus side, you learn something new!

And stylus input so it would be useful for writing. Oh, I'd love that.

Just had our "Meet the Teacher" night at school. Had to recommend to a bunch of parents not to buy their kids an iPad, which was odd since I was holding mine in my hands at the time. But without pen input, there's too many things they just can't do efficiently.

The bulk discount is about $10 per iPad, I'd guess. The case might be $50, they're hopefully budgeting a good chunk of cash for apps from the Volume Purchase Programme, and then there's infrastructure (perhaps they've bought AirPrint printers for classrooms so kids can print their artwork, etc). They're probably using some sort of cart to store iPads / charge / sync them to a bunch of MacBooks or iMacs they also would have had to buy. It adds up pretty quick.
