BYU Prof. Says University Classrooms Will Be "Irrelevant" By 2020 469

dragoncortez writes "According to this Deseret News article, University classrooms will be obsolete by 2020. BYU professor David Wiley envisions a world where students listen to lectures on iPods, and those lectures are also available online to everyone anywhere for free. Course materials are shared between universities, science labs are virtual, and digital textbooks are free. He says, 'Higher education doesn't reflect the life that students are living ... today's colleges are typically tethered, isolated, generic, and closed.' In the world according to Wiley, universities would still make money, because they have a marketable commodity: to get college credits and a diploma, you'd have to be a paying customer. Wiley helped start Flat World Knowledge, which creates peer-reviewed textbooks that can be downloaded for free, or bought as paperbacks for $30."

US Military Issuing iPod Touches To Soldiers 323

644bd346996 writes "Newsweek has an article about the latest weapons in the US military's arsenal. The iPod Touch and the iPhone are being adapted as general purpose handhelds for soldiers in the field. 'Apple gadgets are proving to be surprisingly versatile. Software developers and the US Department of Defense are developing military software for iPods that enables soldiers to display aerial video from drones and have teleconferences with intelligence agents halfway across the globe. Snipers in Iraq and Afghanistan now use a "ballistics calculator" called BulletFlight, made by the Florida firm Knight's Armament for the iPod Touch and iPhone. Army researchers are developing applications to turn an iPod into a remote control for a bomb-disposal robot (tilting the iPod steers the robot). In Sudan, American military observers are using iPods to learn the appropriate etiquette for interacting with tribal leaders.'"

British Spy Agency Searches For Real-Life 'Q' 79

suraj.sun writes with this quote from the Associated Press:"Britain's domestic spy agency — MI5 — is hunting for its very own 'Q,' of sorts. MI6's sister organization, which carries out surveillance on terror suspects inside Britain and gives security advice to the government, is searching for someone to lead its scientific work. Projects could include everything from developing counterterrorism technology to tackling a biological or chemical attack. 'Looking for a chief scientific adviser to lead and coordinate the scientific work of the security service so that the service continues to be supported by excellent science and technology advice,' MI5's Web site ad reads. MI5 has long had a roster of scientific staff tasked with developing high-tech gadgets, but an official said the service now wants a high-profile figure to lead pioneering work in technology and science. The adviser's work will focus chiefly on creating sophisticated new tools to help security service officers carry out surveillance and analysis work, said a government security official, who requested anonymity to discuss the work of MI5."

If I had mod points, you would most definitely be modded up! You just hit he nail directly on the head about what the hell is wrong with my country.(not sure if you are from here or not, so not making an assumption) People got all happy and content when everyone was running up thousands of dollars in credit card debt on bullshit like big screen TV's and SUV's and getting mortgages they couldn't afford. Now that the bubble has burst, everyone wants to sit and bitch about it, but no one wants to take any action. I'm just as guilty as the next person myself so I guess I'm just as much a part of the problem as the other 2 billion lazy ass Americans. In any case nice point!!

Time Warner Recommends Internet For Some Shows 379

EdIII writes "The dispute between Time Warner and Viacom over fees seems to be without any resolution this year. Time Warner faces the possibility of being without content for almost 20 channels. Alexander Dudley, a spokesperson for Time Warner, is fighting back: 'We will be telling our customers exactly where they can go to see these programs online,' Mr. Dudley said. 'We'll also be telling them how they can hook up their PCs to a television set.' Why pay for digital cable when many content providers are now providing it on demand via the Internet? Not to mention the widespread availability of TV shows in both standard and high definition on public and private torrent tracker sites. It is entirely possible to watch television with no commercials or advertising with only an Internet connection. So getting your content via the Internet is not exactly free, but it certainly isn't contributing to Time Warner or any other cable providers' revenue stream. The real question is why Time Warner would fight back by so clearly showing how increasingly obsolete they are becoming and that cable providers are losing their monopolistic grip on media delivery." If no agreement is reached, those channels are supposed to be dropped just after midnight tonight.

First of all I'll kick in my stupid mortgage story. I have a younger sibling who at 21 thought he needed a 4 bedroom, 1900 sq ft home. At the time, my parents, who are well off by most standards, only owned a 1850 sq ft house. He was making maybe $25,000 a year. The folks tried for MONTHS to talk the moron out of it, but to no avail. My family does business with a certain bank and has done so for like 50 years or something. When he went there to get the loan, they flat out refused. They told him he was over spending and that since they had his checking account, they could see that the balance in his account each month wouldn't support the loan he was looking for. Good for them! He then went to another bank, one the fucking cunt of a Realtor( I hate using the c-word but since I am female, I can do it. Plus she really deserves that title.) suggested. They approved him for like a $95,000 home loan and he took full advantage of it. Two years later, house gets repossessed, might I add after my folks have to cover multiple house payments, and he moves home. The moral of the story was, he was mostly at fault, the bank was definitely at fault, but I think I blame the fucking cunt of a Realtor the most. Although he was ultimately the retard that made the decision, she took advantage of him. She fully talked to him into the house she sold him. Our local news was running a story on young home owners and she told him if he would just go ahead and buy the house she would make sure he got on TV and got to talk. What 21 year old is gonna pass that up. She tried to peddle this "American Dream" idea to someone who couldn't afford and frankly didn't deserve it then and to this day STILL doesn't deserve it!
Anyways, the bigger issue behind all of this is the distorted view of what the American Dream is and who should have it. I am all about the best and brightest getting what they deserve, but just because you live here and pay taxes doesn't mean you deserve it. I agree that everyone has the right to dream, but if you have to put yourself in debt by tens of thousands to credit card companies just so you can feel important, you my friend a ID10T!!! You don't deserve anything but a swift kick in the face, and possibly balls if you happen to have them. If you want to work hard and earn that dream go ahead, shoot for stars. Live sensibly and realize that your time will come. Just because you think you deserve a big house and fancy shit doesn't mean you do. I just hate when people assume everyone should be given everything they want. They shouldn't!! That is why it is called a Dream you fuck tarts!!! In closing I think it's everyone's fault our economy is the way it is. We all need to be smarter about our money and things, eventually, will work out for the better.
