Submission + - How do slashdotters manage email on their laptops?

dotancohen writes: "I'll soon be getting a new Dell laptop that'll be running Fedora Core 5 or 6. I need to access the email stored on my home box from the laptop, and also to read new email sent to me while I'm not home (and the home box is shut down). If I run an IMAP server at home, then I can't read the mail when the home box is down. But if I pull from the POP3 server (and leave the mail on the server) then I won't be able to sort and file the mail while on the go. Is there anyway to sync the mail accounts between two linux boxen, assuming that I'm using the same mail client? I currently use Kmail, but I might switch to Eudora in April/March when it becomes available for Linux.

Thanks in advance."

Journal Journal: The Prophet Mohammed Is a FAILURE 15

As I see it, the main message of the Koran is really this: Give up your tribes and tribal Gods, and replace them with a Unified Nation of Islam and worshiping Allah Alone. Mohammed got this idea from what he saw (in 600 A.D.) as the strength of the Jews and the Christians- their unity (nevermind that 400 years later Christianity would experience the Great Schism and that 1200 years later Judaism under the pressure of secular oppression would split in thirds into Orthodox, Conservative, and Ref

A Tale of Two Cable Modems

I get a call from my Daughter. Her and her Hubby had just moved to a far west suburb of the urban area that I live in. They formerly had WOW! internet access via a cable modem. When they moved they went to Time Warner Roadrunner cable modem service.

Submission + - Keeping Hackers Interested In School

radiofreestl writes: "I teach computer classes at a high school. Next semester I will be doing an independent study with a kid who is pretty much a computer prodigy, but who is bored out of his mind at school and fails most of his classes. He just got caught hacking into the school network to change his grades. Ordinarily with these advanced kids I try to teach them programming and/or push them toward A+ certification, but this kid just won't put up with the drudgery of it. I also worry since he's so smart that he will outrun my usefulness to him very quickly and not get much out of our class. Ultimately I want to keep this kid from dropping out and turning into just another cracker. What do you suggest I do with this guy?"

Submission + - One man's tale of ighting spam and managing email

PetManimal writes: "Mike Elgan claims he was able to take care of his spam problem, after years of messing around with filters, various antispam software pacakges, and temporary email addresses. Part of his technique involves consolidating his email to three public, private and personal addresses, and having each account handled by different spam-fighting email services — for instance, the public address on his own domain is forwarded to Gmail, which he claims is able to catch 99% of spam. He also uses BlackBerry, SpamArrest, and Outlook for his two other accounts. From the article:
All messages are available on my phone, but only important ones alert me. It's easy for me, because I never have to manage spam. And it's easy for people to correspond with me, because they never have to guess what my e-mail address is, nor do they ever have to change my e-mail address in their contact databases.
He notes, however, that many employers won't allow this degree of choice or customization for work-related email."

Submission + - AMEX Hack for the Holidays

ECRocker writes: "Did you get one of those "all-purpose" credit card/gift cards for chirstmas? I recieved my $25 American Express card last week, and decided to use the rest up yesterday. After getting back from chick fa la, I checked my balance online at AmericanExpress.com. My balance showed -0.07. And the charge of 4.82 was in the pending collumn of transactions. It is a gift card, and there is no way I could get billed for the extra ammount. Like most fast food resurants, I never signed anything. I decided to try it again. For dinner I went to taco bell. Wow, that was the best #8 I've ever had! I assume by today the card's balance will be posted in the red, and will get declined next time I try to use it. Until American Express does something about this critical flaw — enjoy free stuff!"

Liberating & Restricting C-SPAN's Floor Footage 97

bigmammoth writes "C-SPAN's bid to "liberate" the House and Senate floor footage has re-emerged and been shot down. In an aim to build support a recent New York Times editorial called for reality TV for congress. But what is missing from this editorial is the issue of privatization and the subsequent restriction of meaningful access to these media assets. Currently the U.S. government produces this floor footage and it is public domain. This enables projects such as metavid to publicly archive these media assets in high-quality Ogg Theora using all open source software, guaranteeing freely reusable access to both the archive and all the media assets. In contrast C-SPAN's view-only online offerings disappear into their pay for access archive after two weeks and are then subject to many restrictions." (Continues)

Journal Journal: Urgh, why am I bleeding now? 2

For some reason, the past two nights I seem to be bleeding whilst sleeping (quite a bit, though it is hard to tell exactly how much, since I am swallowing a fair amount). It isn't a nosebleed either. I noticed that a fairly sizeable number of my stitches seem to have "disappeared" (and no I have been good and have refrained from plucking them out). I think the antihistimines I took two days ago may be partially to blame :-| I believe I shall be visiting the doc a bit early f

Submission + - The battle over AT&T's fiber rollout

Tyler Too writes: AT&T is facing heated opposition from some communities where it wants to deploy its U-Verse fiber network. Ars Technica has a feature looking at the situation in the suburbs of Chicago. 'Legal uncertainty is the rule when it comes to IPTV deployments by telecommunications companies. Neither Congress nor the FCC have weighed in on whether services like U-verse require their operators to take out a cable franchise from cities' It's not just Chicago, either: 'With AT&T set to upgrade its infrastructure to support U-verse across its wide service area, this is a battle that could play out in thousands of communities across the country over the next few years.'

Journal Journal: A Wii Conversation 6

To put this in perspective, you need to know that my wife is not a gamer. Not in the least. When the kids and I talk about games she nods politely and leaves it at that. In five years I have seen her play a game once, and that was when it the kids pick for what we did on Family Night.

After we left the store we were talking about what to get my youngest stepson for Christmas.

Submission + - Real Estate Heat Maps Increase Market Transparency

Doug writes: "As reported by the Los Angeles Times (http://www.latimes.com/business/la-re-web3dec03,1 ,5128944.story?coll=la-mininav-business ), map-based real estate sites Zillow.com ( http://zillow.com/ Trulia.com (http://trulia.com ), and HotPads.com (http://hotpads.com) have launched pricing, demographic, and user traffic "heat maps" to increase market transparency. The "heat maps" overlay a color gradient on maps to depict the distribution of different attributes among areas: average sale/rental price, demographic information, and user traffic trends. While some of this information is reported to be inaccurate, the majority comes from government census data."
