I don't think reddit's goal is to get more eyeballs. Rather, it seems to be to temporarily maximize certain arbitrary metrics until they get to an IPO. Eyeballs could be such a metric, but I don't think it is one they care about (or else they are even more incompetent than I think they are). I think they are mostly pretending to have great plans and ideas, in order to convince investors that they *will* attract eyeballs *in the future*, after the IPO.

China is not in any way, shape or form relevant to science. In fact, never working with China again will probably be a very good thing for the quality of America's research output. Not the quantity, because producing a boatload of worthless publications has been the one strength of Chinese "research" for a long time, but the quality of scientific output can only benefit from having no connection to China whatsoever (speaking from extensive experience...).

I think experience has by now pretty well established that monetizing social media is not possible without extensive enshitification. Either you run a site as a non-profit, and there might be some hope of it not being horrendously terrible, or you make money (for a little while) by destroying the site.

This is of course very unfortunate. Most likely, it will now be less than a decade before the project gets run into th ground by power hungry moderators (make no mistake, once any steering committee goes down the path of censoring their community, this result enshitification is unavoidable). Hopefully, by that time, there will be a good alternative to gcc.
