Comment He's right about Bitcoin, but wrong about crypto (Score 1) 217

Some cryptocurrencies ARE useful, and provide useful services. Eg cryptos that make it efficient and practical to pay people for using storage on their machines, or pay people for using their spare bandwidth to relay data across the internet. Bitcoin makes crypto look like a phase. I'll be happy when it's dead... it's going to be a long wait though. Bitcoin wont collapse overnight.

Comment Latency meant stadia was never viable (Score 1) 44

Executives at Google have no idea how important latency is to the feel of a game. Add a 30ms input delay to any gamer and they'll feel it immediately and try to fix it, it makes a HUGE difference. It's like putting a pebble in your bed. It seems tiny from a numerical analysis, but it will totally ruin your experience. Even if Google didn't have an extensive history of abandoned products, stadia was doomed from the start (I hope).

Comment It's basically a certianty that he's cheating (Score 5, Informative) 158

Since he's on a twitch stream he knows people are watching him play, so for example he would not do something like instantly fold KK preflop when an opponent has AA (the only possible better hand) - if he did that it would be extremely obvious he magically knew another player had AA. Instead he'll make a small raise as expected, then when the player with AA raises he'll act like its a really difficult decision for him then throw his cards away.

The problem is that you need to be fairly competent at poker to understand he's cheating, so if this goes to court it'll be hard to convince a jury that doesnt consist of poker pros. Lots of wild theories are being made, trying to understand how he is cheating. Comment NVidia is too slow - All mining will end soon (Score 3, Interesting) 105

Cryptocurrencies are moving towards being mineless. Most of the newer cryptocurrencies can't be mined and bitcoin and ethereum and moving towards an upgrade that will remove mining to a much more efficient system (that uses less than 1/1000th of the energy mining does). They are moving to a "Proof-of-stake" system from a "Proof-of-work" system.

Comment Re:Heads-up Texas Holdem (Score 1) 164

Uh, several more years?

Yes, years. Libratus uses 16 Terabytes of memory for just a 2 player game. The size of the game tree increases by at least a factor of 1000 when moving up to just 3 players. That's significantly more memory. Also the computations themselves take much longer when there's more than 2 players as something called "card removal" comes into effect.

Comment Re:Important milestone (Score 1) 164

That's not true. Poker does not require adapting to human behaviour. Just like in chess, poker AIs are always thinking about the best possible counter to their moves and trying to come up with a strategy to that (this process is repeated many times). No understanding of human behaviour is needed, an I expect that Libratus has no code in it whatsoever that adapts to the opponent it is playing.
