This is id Software (Rage is Windows only) and Epic (still no Linux client for Unreal Tournament 3). When Valve finishes porting the Source engine, they will have the engine with most reach and since they are also delivering the distribution network, they will probably be on the throne for a very long time.

I am pretty sure most things we do (short of actually building a bomb to blow ourselves up along with the planet) will not bother the planet at all. It has been here for over 4 billion years.
