I would also hope none of my colleagues are dumb enough to post "On super secret recce-mission with *name*, lol. Location: Afghanistan"

You have a point though, that facebook can be used to collect quite a lot of information, thats why its important to be aware of these issues, to keep sensitive stuff off it. And/or use a fake surname.

Submission + - Emotional Robot "Reddy" now Available (robomotio.com)

dletourneau writes: " "Reddy" the Emotional Robot is now available for purchase from RoboMotio inc. Especially designed for human-robot interaction topics, the humanoid Reddy is a development tool as well as an entertainment robot. By combining facial expression to arms movement, it can easily express a wide range of emotions like joy, anger, sadness, surprise or disgust. Nine quiet servos control parts of the face, such as lips, eyes pitch and yaw and eyebrows though eight quiet and powerful digital servos control neck pitch and yaw, shoulders and elbows. Reddy can either run on a simple sequence script or be coupled to a more complex emotional system for very dynamic and realistic interaction. Optional hardware, such as microphones and cameras, can be added to the robot to perform localization and separation of sound sources as well as speech and objects detection and recognition. Sounds are played through a speaker installed on the chest. Moreover, the torso of Reddy is designed to be installed on many standard or non-standard mobile robot base for navigation. Videos and photos are also available on the web site."

Submission + - Is discrimination against singles common in IT?

antifoidulus writes: At work we occasionally have to pull shifts to support our application, and we divide each day into a day shift and night shift. However, the married people at my office have all coopted the day shifts and because there are more of them than there are unmarried people, they not only force the singles to work nights(including weekends), but force us to work almost 2x as many shifts per person. I guess they assume that since we aren't married our lives are pointless and should be spent at work, but I don't see them eager to dole out the raises in the same fashion. Is this type of behavior prevalent in the IT world? In the US, is it even legal to so blatantly discriminate against a group of people? What are some of the worst things slashdotters have seen in regards to this type of behavior?

Submission + - Umami, the fifth flavour

g-to-the-o-to-the-g writes: An article on the CBC is reporting about the fifth (and largely unknown to North Americans) sense of flavour, known as umami. The flavour has been described as "savoury", and gives things like meat and cheese taste of fullness. From the article:

Umami was first identified in Japan, in 1908, when Dr. Kikunae Ikeda concluded that kombu, a type of edible seaweed, had a different taste than most foods. When umami is an unfamiliar concept to some new [people], Pratt tells them to think about the taste of potato chips. You can't eat just one, but it's not because of the salt. If that were the case, pretzels and corn chips would be scarfed down in the same number.

Submission + - gaming-wiki.com launched! (gaming-wiki.com)

Sargonas writes: "Gaming-wiki.com has been launched recently, a fresh attempt at a community driven gaming site. While the review sites are in an over-abundance, they are limited to information written by staff that is paid to write specific issues, with a user opinionated slant. While this is good, it does not provide the one stop shopping source for all-encompassing info that a wiki on the same subject can provide.

Gaming-wiki aims to be the first gaming related wiki that builds up a strong user base and CONTINUES to move forward with community backing, unlike similar attempts in the past that were left on the side of the tubes due to disuse. A wiki is first and foremost a community driven system, without users to submit, it grows stale and old. With hope, this new endeavor will build up enough momentum to carry itself into the spot of the premier place for gaming information."

Sony

New Sony DVDs Not Working In Some Players 651

An anonymous reader writes "It seems that the most recent DVDs released by Sony — specifically Stranger Than Fiction, Casino Royale, and The Pursuit of Happyness — have some kind of 'feature' that makes them unplayable on many DVD players. This doesn't appear to be covered by the major media yet, but this link to a discussion over at Amazon gives a flavor of the problems people are experiencing. A blogger called Sony and was told the problem is with the new copy protection scheme, and they do not intend to fix it. Sony says it's up to the manufacturers to update their hardware."

Submission + - Microsoft XBox360 with Blu-Ray?

RCTrucker7 writes: "Updated: Thursday, 22 March 2007 Microsoft: Xbox 360 Blu-ray Possible From www.next-gen.biz http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_conte nt&task=view&id=4996&Itemid=2 Microsoft isn't so anti-Sony that it wouldn't offer up an Xbox 360 Blu-ray solution if the format beats out HD DVD. Xbox UK boss Neil Thompson told BBC News, "Whatever format wins it is highly likely we will offer a solution." Microsoft enjoys downplaying the PlayStation 3's Blu-ray movie playback ability, often saying that Sony is forcing consumers to adopt a pricey feature that they don't necessarily want. "The only debate is if you want to watch Blu-ray movies and pay the extra money for that feature. We prefer to offer the consumer choice," he added. Microsoft currently offers a $200 Xbox 360 peripheral that plays Blu-ray rival HD DVD discs. This isn't the first time that Microsoft has hinted that it would be willing to adapt to a Blu-ray world. Xbox head Peter Moore himself said a Blu-ray add-on would be possible, but also made clear that Microsoft is still firmly behind HD DVD. Here's the link for the word "possible" in the last sentence too. http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_conte nt&task=view&id=2053&Itemid=2"
