The BBC has quietly updated its hugely popular iPlayer with a verification layer that closes the door on open source implementations of RTMP (real-time messaging protocol) streaming, The Register has learned.
To me, this is utterly baffling. SWF verification makes absolutely no difference to tools designed to cirvumvent the BBC's copy protection methods (get_iplayer works fine).
All it has done is alienated the creators of some very slick iplayer apps.

Frankly, we haven't heard much noise coming from the XBMC camp in quite some time. All that changes today, as the project has just launched its latest major update in v9.11. The so-called Camelot build is now available for download on Windows, OS X and Linux, with the most notable changes including a revamped user interface, DirectX support by default in Windows, a "complete reorganization of the settings menus, automatic video information extraction, and smoother video playback." You'll also find updated scrapers, expanded remote control support and updated codecs. Tap that source link for the download and condensed changelog -- though, we should caution you that the live installer seems to be causing issues for some, so try and stay positive, okay?

It doesn't solve the problem, but on your own stuff you can just do it yourself. We just do a simple redirect, and get the benefit of tagging an analytics campaign as well.

All fair points.
For one, you are correct about the Live TV support. One of the benefits of having such a large community is that we get a multitude of third-party plugins, scripts, skins, etc. That is also a problem in itself though, because they are often half-finished and poorly implemented. The MythTV frontend is such an example, though it has recently been picked up an greatly improved by our own dtierney.
The DVR rewrite is much more than that, it is an entire add-on framework that makes development more modular. It is being designed as a 'pvr-frontend' solution, one that you can hookup to one of many backends. There's no reason to rewrite what's already been done.
Your baby is ugly too! Really, though, the XBMC skinning engine is so powerful that simply diving in and changing a few things isn't exactly easy. That's also why we've drawn the interests of so many talented skinners and modders, the possibilities are endless. So it's a trade-off.
Currently Live TV certainly isn't what XBMC is known for, but it certainly excels as the face of your media library. We hope to improve that as time goes.

An anonymous reader writes: The latest stable release of the cross platform media center, XBMC, includes support for VDPAU acceleration in Linux, allowing it to take advantage of GPU assisting decoding for video. The release also adds PPC support on Mac OS X, for old timers, and host of other improvements including new Karakoe features, enhancements to the skinning engine (a showcase of which can be seen in this video of the Aeon Stark skin), support for more codecs, etc. It's now available for grabs here.
