Submission + - Analyzing Tweets To Identify Psychopaths (forbes.com)

nonprofiteer writes: Researchers presenting at Defcon next week have developed a psychopathy prediction model for Twitter. It analyzes linguistic tells to rate users' levels of narcissism, machiavellianism and other similarities to Patrick Bateman. “The FBI could use this to flag potential wrongdoers, but I think it’s much more compelling for psychologists to use to understand large communities of people,” says Chris Sumner of the Online Privacy Foundation

Some of the Twitter clues: Curse words. Angry responses to other people, including swearing and use of the word “hate.” Using the word “we.” Using periods. Using filler words such as “blah” and “I mean” and “um.”

So, um, yeah.

Submission + - Nokia Lumia shipments beat iPhone, Samsung Android phones through first Qs (bgr.com) 1

zacharye writes: Nokia (NOK) has hit a bit of a rough patch lately, having just reported its third consecutive billion-dollar quarterly loss earlier this week. Of course, investors saw some promise in Nokia’s earnings report, and it turns out there may be even more cause for optimism than they initially thought. According to market research firm Strategy Analytics, Nokia’s Windows Phone efforts are off to a better start than Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone or Samsung’s (005930KS) Android smartphones at this point in their respective product cycles...

Submission + - Ask Slashdot: Textbook on Statistics for Mathematicians 1

Kommissar Schneider writes: I am looking for a textbook on statistics, written so that a mathematician with a good background on probability theory will be able not only to understand the methods and their applications, but also the underlying models and theory. A rigorous mathematical presentation combined with some intuition would be great. Of course, the truth is out there: I could figure everything out by consulting different sources. But a concise, unified approach would be more efficient.

Submission + - Black Death Discovered In Oregon (ibtimes.com)

redletterdave writes: "The Black Death, a strain of bubonic plague that destroyed nearly a third of Europe's entire population between 1347 and 1369, has been found in Oregon. Health officials in Portland have confirmed that a man contracted the plague after getting bitten by a cat. The unidentified man, who is currently in his 50s, had tried to pry a dead mouse from a stray cat's mouth on June 2 when the cat attacked him. Days later, fever and sickness drove the man to check himself into Oregon's St. Charles Medical Center, where he is currently in "critical condition.""

Submission + - Chords to 1300 songs analyzed statistically for patterns (hooktheory.com) 1

hooktheory writes: "We looked at the statistics gathered from 1300 choruses, verses, etc. of popular songs to discover the answer to a few basic questions. First we look at the relative popularity of different chords based on the frequency that they appear in the chord progressions of popular music. Then we begin to look at the relationship that different chords have with one another.

To make quantitative statements about music you need to have data; lots of it. Guitar tab websites have tons of information about the chord progressions that songs use, but the quality is not very high. Just as important, the information is not in a format suitable for gathering statistics. So, over the past 2 years we’ve been slowly and painstakingly building up a database of songs taken mainly from the billboard 100 and analyzing them 1 at a time. At the moment the database of songs has over 1300 entries indexed.

Knowing these patterns can give one a deeper more fundamental sense for how music works"

Should I click on it?

I am tempted to know why they have only six reasons, and not seven, or eight, or nine hundred gazzillion reasons

Submission + - NC Republicans Consider Outlawing Sealevel Rise Predictions (newsobserver.com) 2

ideonexus writes: "Republicans in North Carolina are floating a bill that would force planners to only consider past historical data in predicting the sea-level rise (SLR) for the state as opposed to considering projections that take Global Warming into account. NC-20, the pro-development lobbying group representing twenty counties along the NC coast, is behind the effort and asserts that the one-meter prediction would prohibit development on too much land as opposed to SLR predictions of 3.9 to 15.6 inches."
