Nope. This kind of discovery, pushing the frontiers of knowledge, is the only thing we as a species do that's of any value. Spending all of our effort trying to "fix[...] the current issues of the world" would just drag us down to the lowest common denominator.

Let the current issues of the world fix themselves or die trying.

Homebrew Cray-1 140

egil writes "Chris Fenton built his own fully functional 1/10 scale Cray-1 supercomputer. True to the original, it includes the couch-seat, but is also binary compatible with the original. Instead of the power-hungry ECL technology, however, the scale model is built around a Xilinx Spartan-3E 1600 development board. All software is available if you want to build one for your own living room. The largest obstacle in the project is to find original software."

Verizon wants no part of [service plan discounts for bringing your own phone]. I can understand why consumers are upset. But let consumers vote with their wallets rather that over-regulate with Congress.

Congress is already regulating by allocating spectrum through the FCC.

I succumbed and installed MSE a little while ago after hearing good things about it... it found one virus in a zip file (which I knew was dodgy, and had never run), then proceeded to hose my system on reboot. Repeated BSOD reboot, Vista64. It's the only OS crash I've ever had since running Vista (apart from during installation). I had to do a system restore from a few days prior - worked better than I expected, tbh. I'm not going to touch consumer antivirus ever again on my system.
