Not by a long shot. I was born in the very early 70's (I like to obfuscate a bit) and had my first PC when I was 6. I ran a FIDO net BBS back in the early days before the interweb thing came around (just another fad, I assure you...). And there are many more like me. We connected quite a bit back then, wrote code in BASIC and C and had a good time in our nerd world.

Hell, I was graduating high school by the time you were born. :)

No. No, they showed that Clinton would win the popular vote by 2-5% which she did. So the polls were pretty damn accurate. The Electoral College is another thing altogether and harder to predict as you essentially need to forecast 50 states plus DC accurately. This is much harder to do than get the national poll.

It's Not Just You: Google Added Annoying Icons To Search On Desktop (theverge.com) 70

Kim Lyons, writing for The Verge: Google added tiny favicon icons to its search results this week for some reason, creating more clutter in what used to be a clean interface, and seemingly without actually improving the results or the user experience. The company says it's part of a plan to make clearer where information is coming from, but how? In my Chrome desktop browser, it feels like an aggravating, unnecessary change that doesn't actually help the user determine how good, bad, or reputable an actual search result might be. Yes, ads are still clearly marked with the word "ad," which is a good thing. But do I need to see Best Buy's logo or AT&T's blue circle when I search for "Samsung Fold" to know they're trying to sell me something? Google says the favicon icons are "helping searchers better understand where information is coming from, more easily scan results & decide what to explore."

If you don't care for the new look, Google has instructions on how to change or add a favicon to search results. Lifehacker also has instructions on how to apply filters to undo the favicon nonsense.

Comment The internet is more than streaming video (Score 4, Insightful) 253

Why is "streaming video" the only thing they seem to care about? Are they saying that when I download a new ~100GB of steam its impossible for me to notice the difference between a 20 minute download and a 3 hour download? Internet speed may not affect all people in all scenarios, but downloading games, driver updates, torrents, whatever are all going to be NOTICEABLY faster on faster internet.

Not just that, but also UPLOADING videos to youtube. My 400mbit download speed is fine for all the things the article mentions, but i'm limited to 25 mbit upload speed because of crappy docsis tehcnology. If we had Fios here i'd be able to get more like 800 mbit uploads (or at least, as fast as youtube will accept from a single client). If you want to share a video you just made, being able to go live with in 5 minutes beats taking 45 minutes.

Back in the early days of cable internet peoples minds were blown by ~3mbit downloads because they were coming off of 56k dialup. Anything that asserts we don't need faster connection speeds will always prove to be hilariously wrong.

I made the decision this week to cut the cord myself and I dropped all my TV equipment today.

In an industry where high price/low value is cited by 80% of the people dropping their TV service, I was told that I had to pay an extra $60 a month to get a "free" internet speed upgrade to switch from a grandfathered TWC plan to a new spectrum plan with no other benefits. $145->$205.

Instead I opted to drop tv, drop my bill to $65, and get the "still techncially supposed to be free" bump from 60x5 to 100x10.

I just don't know how they think people wil pay $140 for Cable TV when there are so many solid alternatives that are under $40 if not under $30 a month (Sling, Hulu, Netflix, Etc).

Comment Re:speeds "up to".... (Score 1) 69

I remember a few years ago, I was waiting for Docsis 3 based services to come out like their 30/5 and 50/5. In the mean time they offered me 20x2 over the phone. I ended up going on their web site and signed up for it where it was also advertised as 20x2.

Once I started using it, i got a consistent 20x1 on speed test. I thought something was provisioned wrong accidentally. Turns out, even though they advertised it as 20x2 even on a screen only accessable AFTER you log in (i.e. where you're picking which speeds you want to upgrade to), it was "actually 20x1 some places and 20x2 other places."

They were implying that because the speeds were "up to" 20x2, they had no duty to let me know that the upload speed in my area would only be 20x1 - exactly what I was already getting before I upgraded, and I was only upgrading for the upload speed boost.

The wording needs to be considered as a reasonably informed person would - not a know-nothing devils advocate or strict computer interpretation of the rules."Speeds up to" has the implication of "This is the maximum we allow, but network congestion may limit it." If they're capping you to 1 mbit per second, its not up to 2 mbits, its up to 1 - you will never see 2, even at uncongested times.

No reasonable person expects a residential internet connection to be guarenteed to operate at its full rated speed 24/7/365, but the same reasonable person expects that they should be able to get the rated speed at low congestion times. I called them out for bait and switch and they gave me the higher speed for like 2 years free.

And if they're going to offer different products under the same brand name in different areas, they damn well better make sure the product they're offering YOU as a result of entering your login information is the right one, and not a superior one thats actually not really available.

Pretty sure that "18gbps" number isn't right or you're mixing units. You do know that a gigabyte and a gigabit aren't the same thing, right?
