Comment The overall protection is probably much better (Score 2) 391

As viruses do not float around in the air by themselves but in small water droplets which are much larger than viruses and much more easily absorbed by the fibers. Also the protection is obviously much much higher if all people wear masks as the virus/droplet has a high change to get blocked by mask of the person exhaling and then another high chance to get blocked by the mask of the person petentially inhaling. It would also be interesting to know if they/somebody studied the fluid dynamics of what it means that the air gets more spread out when exhaling, in comparison to breathing out through the mouth or nose.

Comment Attention grabbing as the currency of modern media (Score 4, Insightful) 175

This is the result of having attention grabbing for likes, ads and getting some AI to rank your article higher as the main currency of modern media: find some idiot who makes some exceptional unbelievable claim and you will get more attention than by something from a reasonable guy telling everyone what nonsense that is.
Seems this is getting worse and worse and has already infected politics as well a longer while ago as was demonstrated to the world by having an incompetent narcissistic attention (and pussy) grabber get voted to be US president.

Comment " human interference" has nothing to do with this (Score 1) 187

The wave *function* collapses whenever there is interaction/interference of any kind. The bigger myth is that this is in anyway dependent on some human wanting to conduct a measurement. Even if nobody looks, that radioactive decay either happens or does not happen and in turn can cause other things to happen or not happen. The cat is either dead or not, even if we do not know whether it is dead or not.

Every time somebody describes to me how those scammers trick people, those people appear like mentally challenged primary school children, not like adults of whom one would expect they make grown-up decisions all the time.

Comment Even bigger problem on Ubuntu ... (Score 2) 164

is that Ubuntu forces users to install Firefox via snap, which is still totally broken. Eg it will simply fail on any system where the /home/USER directory is a symbolic link to somewhere else. This is the case for the current LTS and I think even still for the current release.

I agree with the other points, though I suspect it is not entirely Firefox's fault: e.g. the whole situation with hardware video acceleration on Linux has been a nuisance since forever.

Sadly this will only get worse, e.g. with regard to Google's passkeys, both at the Firefox browser level but also at the Linux OS level. Again, not Firefox's fault but caused by the general lack of support for new hardware and their drivers on Linux that one can see even with companies like Google.

Comment Totally overhyped, not open source (Score 1) 71

There is no reason to bother until they -- perhaps -- decide to open source this. Their current strategy of not allowing download, not opening the source code is just silly and their excuse for doing this is even more silly.
Let's wait and see if the will become a proper, downloadable, open source software. Until then, I am not interested.

Comment Really incompetent USAF computer scientists? (Score 1) 212

This sounds really hard to believe, because the computer scientists training the system would have to be incredibly incompetent for such a result to be the outcome. Clearly, whatever loss function you use for training, it would give massive penalties for destroying anything that is not the target and increase the loss the further away to destruction happens and even more if it is not the related to the enemy. Any undergraduate CS student should be able to avoid and outcome like the one described.
To have somebody from the USAF bang on about such a thing is really scary.
