Oh! Great! A new Shell! From Microsoft! I first heard about it a year ago and they say that it will still take 3 to 5 years of developpement...

I don't understand why they don't take any existing shell from FreeBSD or OpenBSD and simply do a Port... It would, at least, cut the developpement a bit... but 3 to 5 years...

Journal Journal: Patents

http://yro.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=138486&cid=11590043

"It was never the object of patent laws to grant a monopoly for every trifling device, every shadow of a shade of an idea, which would naturally and spontaneously occur to any skilled mechanic or operator in the ordinary progress of manufactures. Such an indiscriminate creation of exclusive privileges tends rather to obstruct than to stimulate invention. It creates a class of speculative schemers who make it their business to watch the advancing wave of improvement, and gather its foam in the form of patented monopolies, which enable them to lay a heavy tax on the industry of the country, without contributing anything to the real advancement of the arts. It embarrasses the honest pursuit of business with fears and apprehensions of unknown liability lawsuits and vexatious accounting for profits made in good faith."

Couldn't have said it any better...

Journal Journal: Americans

I saw this passage in a text.(http://www.fair.org/media-beat/940727.html) It's a comment by (New York Times?) columnist Sydney Schanberg

"We Americans are the ultimate innocents. We are forever desperate to believe that this time the government is telling us the truth."

I'm saddened to find that there is truth in that line...

Journal Journal: Women in IT

I just seen this story, And while i can't comment on it (else everyone loses the mods point I given them) I DO have an opinion I'd like to share.

Ok, First of all Women ARE different from Men. Even if it's just physical, there ARE differences. It's a Fact.

Second, There are very few Women in Math, Physics and antyhing related to IT. Yet, my university campus is composed 60% of Womens. (Based on admission statistics)

Third, Why are these topics so importants? If they don't like Math, we can't force them to go in that field. Does it change anything if all Math teachers are Men? Does it change anything if all Nurses are Women?

I believe everyone should get an equal chance at success, but I don't believe we should force issues on people.

Journal Journal: Water bad for Electronics

It sucks when you get waken up at 5h30-6h in the morning on a day off. It sucks even more when it's the leaking wall that wakes you up.

I live in a dorm. A 12 story high Dorm. Someone on the 10th floor forgot to close the window during the night. Hard to believe he 'forgot' considering it's 10 Degrees Celsius Below the freezing point outside.

To make a Long story short, a water pipe splited open because of the cold. Flooded 4 floors and spilled wated on the remaining 6 floors...

I was lucky: My computer was powered down. (it lives on the floor) I hate to think what would have happenned had it been on.

Bye Bye power supply and all hard drives with it.

Journal Journal: The One Depression 1

I've been trough Depression, again, and notice that depression is kinda like carrying the One Ring:

-It's a heavy burden
-You have to carry it yourself
-You can't give it to anyone else without corrupting them, even if they can resist it
-You can't walk alone
-Friends find you wierd because you have the tendency to disapeer in the middle of a party. -You can, in theory, just hide someone and forget about it, but it's praticly impossible to do
-On the outside it doesn't look that bad, but it's slowly twisting you on the inside...
-You tend to favor dark places, away from daylight and people, and rely on the same food day after day...

And Finaly:

-Even if the situation is dark, bleak and that every odds seems agains you, some friends will always be at your side.

Journal Journal: Women and gaming

i've just read this news: http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/10/20/1542233&tid=127

The problems isn't just gaming or the Computer field, It' a bigger social problem.

Think about it for a second: why are some recent field held almost by exclusively by mens?

Take cars for exemple: This is a relatively new field, but it's held by mostly mens? Why? Because of the technical aspect of things. Women tend more to favor activity or feild that favors a social aspect.

I live on college campus and can witness this behavior around me:

Engineering: 70% guys
Medical School: 3 women /2 men ratio
Nursing: 5 guys total

The computer is still a technical 'thingy' and, even though game are becoming more and more social (The Sims for exemple), it is still a men's world.

The fact that immaturity rules most FPS games doesn't help a bit. If I was a Women, I would probably NOT be a big gamer (maybe except for some RPG games).

I REALLY think we need more girls in computing and in gaming in general. They tend to bring out aspect of developpement left out by all-men teams (And they usually make great manager)

But what can we do?
(beside stopping the sexist jokes, the immatures comments and jugements,...)

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot.

C++ makes it harder, but you blow your whole leg off.
