For example a Triad Series 12 point of sale / inventory management system. Used to be tens of thousands of them in auto parts stores everywhere. There are probably still a few hanging on out there. I spent 1999 trying to fix all our communications with them to get Y2K workarounds in place, and a number of years migrating data off of them to modern systems.

This FDA complaint is relevant to something like "sugar-free" gum. A piece of gum can be pure sugar, but because each piece is less than a gram they get to round it down and claim it's zero. Not arguing the benefits of some diets, but when you're counting every gram for dietary reasons all of those "less than ones" add up quickly.

I refused the various scanners for years. They'd request a pat down instead. Over the years they--I'm certain intentionally--got slower and slower with it. I had one time I ended up waiting 45 minutes for an "available officer" to do it. All while I had about $10k in computer and camera gear sitting on a scanner belt somewhere that I couldn't see it (something they are required to take care of and make sure it is in sight). I still hate that I gave in and started doing the scans after that bullshit.

Add to that the fact that none of them know their own rules on how firearms are to be handled, forcing me to violate laws on their behalf multiple times.

Post 9/11 there are exactly two things that happened that actually matter in terms of airport security:

- Hardened cockpit doors and protocols surrounding the use of those doors

- Passengers know to fight back and not capitulate to attackers

Absolutely nothing the TSA has done has been of any value what-so-ever. They constantly fail tests and have yet to verifiably have stopped a single attack.

Comment Seniors with debit cards? (Score 1) 316

What kind of utopia are you living in where seniors are using their debit cards? It feels like I'm always behind one of two groups: Either a senior with a check (who doesn't get any of this out until after the checkout is complete) or the welfare queen splitting payment between their food stamp card, cash and gift cards to cover their beer and cigarettes.

My biggest problem with self checkout is all of the Walmarts and Targets in my area that have almost eliminated all checkers in favor of self checkout. So now the problems like the above are just magnified as you now have one employee trying to wrangle 5 of those at a time.
