The original Xbox launched in 2001. They had a window of about a year around 2009 where the Xbox division was profitable, and that was partly due to an accounting trick in how they handled the warranty issues on the Xbox 360. They went back to losing money once development on the Xbox One started, and continued losing money until late in the Xbox One lifecycle. It gets blurry after that, as they stopped reporting Xbox separately of other gaming revenue sources. PS5 has been drastically outselling Xbox Series for the entire generation, and its been becoming more lopsided as the generation continues. That can't be good for the overall profitability of Xbox.
This isn't anything short sighted. They gave it over 22 years and lost money for at least 3/4 of those years, and business is trending downward.
