It also costs those who work from home more out of pocket. Is my employer paying for my internet connection and phone bill? No. The increase in my electric bill from not being able to program the thermostat to save money while nobody's here? No. I'm saving a bit on gasoline, but nothing on car insurance or maintenance. My water bill (really well-water conditioning/filtering costs) is up due to being home more. And on a related note my toilet paper costs are up, too, along with dishwasher detergent and kleenex. The cost savings in anti-separation-anxiety treatment for the dogs is eaten up by the increase in cost for maintaining my own semblance of sanity with an increase in the vodka budget. All in all I've considered it a fair trade, even if it tilts a bit toward higher personal expenses. Slap a 5% tax on that (employer paid - as if that doesn't trickle down and get called "rain"), and I've moving to Montana to raise me up a crop of dental floss.
