Comment Anything Built by Humans Will Have Flaws (Score 0) 99

Airplanes have had flaws since the first one flew, and accidents and mistakes and even acts of malice will continue as long as humans are involved in their manufacture and servicing. The latest incident makes it quite clear how mistakes can, do, and will always happen. Boeing CEOs can jump up and down proclaiming their "responsibly" and commitment to safety as much as they like, but they will never be able to monitor every single moment of every single process in the manufacture and servicing of every component that goes out the door as long as humans are involved. To think otherwise is to deny reality.

Comment More Blatant EU Hypocrisy (Score 1) 137

They are only doing this because it gives them the opportunity to shake down an American company. Think of the hypocrisy, for example, that all homes in Germany come "bundled" with a mandatory monthly ARD/ZDF/Deutschland Radio subscription of €18.36 per month; even if the resident can prove that he or she does not own a TV or radio: https://www.rundfunkbeitrag.de... Those who refuse to pay the fee can be sent to prison for up to six months: https://news.in-24.com/lifesty... How is THAT not anticompetitive? More people probably rely on OneDrive than watch ARD/ZDF's awful programming, but somehow Microsoft is the one at fault for "anticompetitive" behaviour.

Comment To what extent does this apply? (Score 1) 18

To what extent does this ruling apply? Are car hire companies in the EU still subject to a licence fee for the ability to receive public broadcasting or does this ruling only apply to music? Were these companies paying two separate fees: one for music content and one for pubic broadcasting? In Germany every household and company is required to pay a mandatory fee known as the "Rundfunkbeitrag" (AKA "GEZ") for the mere possibility being able to consume public broadcasting content. This fee is mandatory even with proof that neither a TV nor radio exists on the premises. This money supposedly goes to the broadcasters.

In addition to the Rundfunkbeitrag, Bars and clubs, however, are also required to make payments to GEMA which supposedly goes to the artists. In the case mentioned in the article it seems that the payments in question are similar to GEMA (music) as opposed to the Rundfunkbeitrag (broadcasting). A few years ago the car hire company, Sixt, unsuccessfully sued in the German courts for having to pay the Rundfunkbeitrag for each of their rental vehicles. I wonder what effect, if any, this new decision could have on the German Rundfunkbeitrag/GEMA scheme?

Could authorities throughout the EU simply redefine the fees as a licence for the ability receive public broadcasting as opposed to just music?

Comment "Cramming" (Score 1) 129

This sounds like another form of "cramming" I experienced something similar by Sprint, after I moved from one end of the State (New York) to another. After terminating my contract and having informed them many times both over the phone and in writing that I had moved they continued to send me bills for the old address. After each call they would tell me that it was a mistake I would wait about 3 weeks then get a new bill. Citibank did the same thing to me. I finally managed to pay off my credit card after several years of rolling over the balance, but then came to realize small magazine subscriptions which I never ordered. The charges were always quickly removed after calling them and spending 30 minutes on the phone, but then after one or two months the charges would reappear.

Comment This should appear on German TV (Score 1) 82

Every individual German household is forced by "law" (Germans love laws) to cough up 17.50€ a month for crap public content like this, even if they do not subscribe to, have access or own a TV capable of reviving it. Had this monkey-rabbt nonsense been produced in Germany, then the animals would likely have alread had the opportunity to fly to the Moon and back, and anyone unwilling to pay for it would have their bank accounts confiscated or spend at least 61 days in jail for not paying their "TV License" - Happy 4th of July from the GEZ Slaves in Germany!
