Freescale's Cheap Chip Could Mean Sub-$99 E-Readers 158

eldavojohn writes "Last week, Freescale Semiconductor announced their i.MX508 chip and a few days ago released a rather bland and boring announcement that it's available. But there was at least one interesting line from that press release, 'The i.MX508 applications processor is expected to be priced at less than $10 (USD) in quantities greater than 250K units.' Yes, less than ten dollars. This sparked a wave of articles detailing how this new chip will allow the sub-$99 e-reader to emerge and according to market research, consumers are thirsty for something much more affordable than the Kindle."

Submission + - Hulu to begin charging for content? (chicagotribune.com)

SpuriousLogic writes: Hulu soared to popularity by offering free online viewing of popular TV shows. Now, that free ride soon may end.

The Internet video site is weighing plans to charge users to watch episodes of "30 Rock," "Modern Family" and "House." The move would mark a sharp change of course for the venture, which was launched nearly two years ago by a consortium of studios to distribute without charge TV shows and movies over the Internet.

The site has spent months studying how to strike a balance between what people expect to watch for free online and for what they would be willing to pay, according to a person familiar with the matter who was not authorized to speak publicly.

One plan under consideration would allow users to view the five most recent episodes of TV shows for free, but require a subscription of $4.99 a month to watch older episodes. Hulu believes it will need at least 20 TV series, both current and those no longer on the air, to make such a pay service attractive to users. A firm pricing model could emerge within six months.

A Hulu spokeswoman declined to comment.

Comment Re:metamaterials are just periodic structures (Score 1) 113

calling metamaterials periodic structures is NOT tautological: a great many periodic structures (as in all most all of them) are not metamaterials, and metamaterials are created by repeating metalic small metalic structures close enough to each other that certain wavelengths of EM radiation see perfect magnetic conductors (which are the same as perfect electric conductors, but a quarter-wavelength away.) this required periodicity is inherently narrow-band, because only a select range of wavelengths will be subject to the quarter-wavelength condition. ...the long and short of it is that you don't get a cloak of invisibility, because metamaterials are just periodic structures and as such are very much narrow band.
