Comment Re:Pooping in the desert (Score 2) 119

Pooping in public lands in the desert is just as inappropriate as pooping in your neighborhood park, especially when people not only leave their piles of crap there but also mounds of used toilet paper. Then tack on the fact that poop and toilet paper don't decompose in the desert climate and stay there a long, long, time. If people had common sense enough not to do it, then there wouldn't be an issue; however, they don't, and they crap all over the place, and it has to be criminalized.

I know it's 4 days later but I missed this article the first time. Almost certainly the stores are not set up to ship anything anywhere other than back to Apple. Shipping to a customer would require individualized packaging that I would expect to be far different than what's used between the stores and the repair facilities.

Genuinely curious, for those who have these sorts of bulbs, is the added value worth the cost (plus vulnerability)?

Yes. "Hey Siri, goodnight" is a huge convenience over walking throughout the house turning off switches and fixtures. Turning on/off the backyard lights from out in the yard, turning on the various lights by voice when I come home with my arms full of groceries, it's a huge advantage. And as I said in another response, the color-changing isn't just a gimmick. I can set my living room to be dark colors for TV watching, a mix for reading, and bright white for projects or housecleaning. Being able to do that without having to use separate fixtures is a win for me.

I don't see the point of being able to make my lights purple or green. Maybe if you are a big fan of the original Star Trek or something

In my living room it's dark colors for watching TV, a mix if sitting around reading, and bright white for projects or housecleaning. My lights often progress through all three in the course of evening.

Comment Re:Like Chatroulette (Score 2) 80

Using Waze already feels like playing roulete. I set a destination while in my driveway. It decides my current location is one of the side roads behind my house, so right off the bat it's a 50:50 chance that the direction I go when I leave my driveway will be correct. Then, while getting out of my driveway, it will reroute, then probably reroute again once I commit to a direction on the road. It also tries to direct me to a precise location in a parking lot, instead of the business itself. I've parked at my destination and it's still trying to reroute me through the lot.

Waze is great for road conditions and locating construction, hazards, police, etc but it is lousy for navigation.

I'm unable to try this until Monday so I have to ask — what is actually happening when the ligatures kick in? If the font renderer ends up putting just one glyph there when the underlying data model has two characters, how do I select only one of them? If I'm cursoring through, does it take one or two arrow taps to move past the ligature? If I select text with a ligature and copy, what gets pasted? Especially if using the font somewhere other than JetBrains' IDE.

Comment WiFi syncing, and HDMI vs AirPlay (Score 1) 174

Ever try to use WiFi syncing to a Mac instead of a USB cable? Often they just won't talk to each other. The biggest annoyance is that syncing sometimes tries to start as soon as the phone is on power, such as when I put it in its car cradle. It will immediately start trying to sync while I'm driving away, which fails as soon as I get far enough down the driveway to leave WiFi range, but the two sides never recover, and usually both have to be restarted to get a sync again. I gave up.

This would also mean the end of Lightning-to-HDMI and you'd only be able to use AirPlay and a target device (Apple TV) to get something onto a TV/monitor. That would really annoy (business and non-business) travelers using such a setup in hotels.
