If Buffett predicts something, I'm likely to listen because he has the bucks to prove he has an ability to forecast. This author doesn't.

Don't have the bucks? This "author" is "BlackRock, the investment giant that manages about $10 trillion." Agreed I'd be very interested to see how this forecast is (or isn't) reflected in their investment strategy.

Yes, please let me summon Google Assistant, Alexa, or whatever I want with the "Bixby button" or other gesture to summon an AI assistant. Bixby is crap. I'm so tired of Samsung, which makes great hardware, crippling it with crapware. Let me use Google's great software with Samsung's great Note or Tab devices. Damn it. Samsung Notes is one of the few exceptions.

This is a really interesting point. If AI-created work is copyrightable, then I create a music-generating AI, buy a bunch of capacity in the cloud, and create a gigantic and every-growing library of copyrighted music. Then for every new song created, I find the most similar thing I created previously, If I create enough, there will be some close matches. Some will be associated with artists with deep pockets. Many will settle when I sue them. . . . . Profit. This is one of those unforeseen consequences things, except the parent post foresaw it.

Submission + - Businesses using Virtual Reality to learn how to best fire people (latimes.com)

McGruber writes: Barry shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He didn’t know why I’d called him into my office, but he knew it couldn’t be good.

I told him we had gotten another report of inappropriate behavior — his sixth this year.

“Oh come on, everyone is so sensitive,” he said. “You know, it wasn’t like this 10 years ago.”

Barry was in his 60s. Finding another job to fill the years before retirement wouldn’t be easy.

“It doesn’t seem like it now, but this may be a good thing for you,” I said.

Comforting lies were not the move. Barry buried his face in his hands, sobbing. Then everything went black.

I took off the virtual reality headset, and the real-life offices of the Culver City VR studio Talespin, the architects of Barry’s very bad day, came back into focus around me.

I had failed the termination simulation.

C'mon ;(

Submission + - Can We Use Special Sails To Bring Old Satellites Back Down To Earth? (universetoday.com)

schwit1 writes: Some exotic-sounding solutions involve harpoons, nets, magnets, even lasers. Now NASA has Purdue University-related startup Vestigo Aerospace money for a six month study that looks at using drag sails to de-orbit space junk, including satellites, spent rocket boosters, and other debris, safely.

Vestigo Aerospace was started by David Spencer, an associate professor in Purdue’s College of Engineering. “Through the six-month study, we will advance drag sail technology for the deorbit of small satellites and launch vehicle stages,” Spencer said in a press release. “The safe disposal of space objects upon mission completion is necessary to preserve the utility of high-value orbits.”

Drag sails are a bit different than other methods. While the harpoons, lasers, and nets proposed by various agencies are meant to deal with the space junk that’s already accumulated, drag sails are designed to be built into a satellite and deployed at the end of their useful life.
