Do you mean to say that the new government established on the back of a foreign invasion would declare a national holiday commemorating said invasion? Shocking.

No, it was declared by the government that was democratically elected more than a year later.

They would have liked to restore the legitimate government to power, but they had all just been executed by the People's Revolutionary Army.

I really don't know why an appraiser is even told what the contract price is.

I've purchased 7 properties and only one appraisal has failed to meet the price. My agent said that she and the mortgage broker would get it fixed - which made me angry because it meant I would be paying $300 for a useless valuation.

I backed out of that deal. I consider the $300 to be money well spent.

Serious question - could you get your bearings from anywhere besides China? I don't mean a U.S. supplier, necessarily. I mean anywhere but China?

80% of the world isn't China - it seems there must be manufacturing elsewhere. If not, then don't you think that's a highly vulnerable position - for the country and for your company - and we should do something to reduce our dependency on them?

Not to pick nits, but notice that this was a Los Angeles appellate court ruling on a California law. So the supreme court wasn't involved and if it gets involved, it will just be the CA supreme court so it wouldn't matter to the rest of the country.

Here in Portland, OR, the local community college network charges $104 per credit.

Thanks entirely to the Democratic ownership of the state legislature and the governorship, Oregon promises free community college for any legal state resident starting out college from highschool (or GED)....

And the Republican legislature of Tennessee says "Welcome to the club, Oregon! What took you so long?".

The fact is, a lot of states are doing it. California offers one year of college. Rhode Island offers 2. New York even includes 4 year institutions. Last month the city of Dallas got in on the action..

Sadly, it's not quite as good as it sounds. They aren't simply dropping the cost of community college to zero. What these things are is a "last dollar" scholarship where they ensure you first get all the federal student aid you are eligible for and the scholarship fills in the rest.

Yes, there are cases where the shareholders aren't wiped out. American Airlines. Even Enron - sort of.

Also, a company doesn't have to liquidate for non-voting shares to realize value. The Ma Bell breakup, for example. If something like that were to happen to Google, then owners of non-voting, non dividend-paying shares would get something out of the breakup.

The point being that those shares are not as vaporous as bitcoin.

There are quite a few efforts along the lines of what you are suggesting, but Openstax is my favorite because they are well funded (Gates Foundation and Hewlett Foundation, among others), they produce a consistent, high-quality product, they don't try to suck you into their ecosystem - they just write and give away the textbooks.

The Open Textbook Network is also very good, but they are more curators of all free textbooks and not so much producers.

Accrued PTO is a liability in the same sense that an unpaid bill is a liability. Eventually it will have to be paid (depending on the local laws). Also, if you think about it, it's a liability that the carries interest. When an employee gets a raise, all of their accrued vacation time gets a raise as well.
