Hummers (both civilian and military) apparently aren't bullet proof either without some hardening by 3rd parties. Maybe the cybertruck's angled design would help deflect/ricochet bullets too. Considering Tesla has hired their own material scientists and designed their own stainless steel alloy, I wouldn't be surprised if they could provide a hardened version for larger rounds and shrapnel. I don't know enough about materials to say if they could do the same thing with stealth-bomber-like metals.

The clearance of the vehicle is easily fixed via upgrading the shocks (eg. aftermarket lift kits for jeeps/trucks)

LOL. "Bullet proof windows". Too stupid.

My bad; I went back and looked at the slides.. it's the stainless-steel panels that are supposed to be "bullet proof" (9mm 115grain from 10m). The glass just says "Ultra-strong glass and polymer-layered composite can absorb and redirect impact force for improved performance and damage tolerance." Yes, I know the demo of the glass was a flop, but they are apparently still working on it.

It looks to me like this thing was really spec'd for military applications:
  • * Bullet proof windows
  • * Tough stainless steel body
  • * Weird angles like a stealth bomber (no right angles to reflect EM)
  • * Autonomous driving! (perfect for transporting supplies through hostile environments)
  • * Insane low-rpm torque for towing supplies through rough terrain.
  • * Solar charging for remote operation (Elon mentioned this capability today)

Instead of going from Military->Consumer like the Hummer and Jeep though; they are marketing this to consumers first? Wonder why.

NERC Fines Utilities $10 Million Citing Serious Cyber Risk, But Won't Name Them (securityledger.com) 28

chicksdaddy shares a report from The Security Ledger: The North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC) imposed its stiffest fine to date for violations of Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) cybersecurity regulations. But who violated the standards and much of what the agency found remains secret. In a heavily redacted 250-page regulatory filing, NERC fined undisclosed companies belonging to a so-called "Regional Entity" $10 million for 127 violations of the Critical Infrastructure Protection standards, the U.S.'s main cyber security standard for critical infrastructure including the electric grid. Thirteen of the violations listed were rated as a "serious risk" to the operation of the Bulk Power System and 62 were rated a "moderate risk." Together, the "collective risk of the 127 violations posed a serious risk to the reliability of the (Bulk Power System)," NERC wrote.

The fines come as the U.S. intelligence community is warning Congress of the growing risk of cyber attacks on the U.S. electric grid. In testimony this week, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats specifically called out Russia's use of cyber attacks to cause social disruptions, citing that country's campaign against Ukraine's electric infrastructure in 2015 and 2016. The extensively redacted document provides no information on which companies were fined or where they are located, citing the risk of cyber attack should their identity be known. Regional Entities account for virtually all of the electricity supplied in the U.S. They are made up of investor-owned utilities; federal power agencies; rural electric cooperatives; state, municipal, and provincial utilities; independent power producers; power marketers; and end-use customers. However, details in the report provide some insight into the fines. For example, violations of a CIP statue that requires companies to "manage electronic access to (Bulk Electric System) Cyber Systems by specifying a controlled Electronic Security Perimeter" is rated a serious risk. So too are violations of CIP requirements calling for covered entities to "implement and document" access controls for "all electronic access points to the Electronic Security Perimeter(s)." Specific requirements that were violated suggest that the companies failed to implement access controls that "denies access by default," "enable only ports and services required for operations and for monitoring Cyber Assets within the Electronic Security Perimeter," and ensure the authenticity of parties attempting to remotely access the company's "electronic security perimeter."

Exxon has at least one Cray up north in the Woodlands which I don't see on the list either.

Microsoft's New Mobile Strategy: Create Windows-like App 'Experiences' For Smartphones (pcworld.com) 74

Microsoft is investing in Windows experiences on mobile devices, with a new app called Your Phone; a migration of Windows 10's Timeline productivity feature to phones; and an update to its launcher app for enterprises. The app, available on Android and iOS, is designed to provide a mirror of a phone straight to a desktop PC, and it will let Windows 10 users access texts, photos, and notifications from their machines. Features will vary depending on iOS and Android. From a report: While Microsoft is also expected to discuss some of the features of its next Windows 10 update (code-named "Redstone 5") at Build, the company indicated that it will be emphasizing cross-platform apps instead. Microsoft will discuss some of these in a Tuesday presentation by Joe Belfiore, who leads Windows "experiences" as the corporate vice president in the Operating Systems Group at Microsoft.

The idea, Belfiore said in a briefing in advance of the show, was that Microsoft needs to know what users are working on, across any device. "Whether you look at a Word doc on Android, iOS, or Windows, is irrelevant," Belfiore said. Belfiore was talking about Timeline, the feature that tracks your work in the Office apps or Edge, recording your activity in what Microsoft calls the Microsoft Graph. But Belfiore could have been talking about any hardware platform. Microsoft sounds like it wants to elevate Microsoft mobile applications to the level of importance of a PC -- making the actual hardware, and operating system, irrelevant.
