Submission + - Open Source Haxe/OpenFL platform will support home game consoles (fortressofdoors.com)

lars_doucet writes: At last week's World Wide Haxe conference, a coalition of game developers announced that the open source platform Haxe/OpenFL is coming soon to home game consoles. The first three games that will ship using the technology are Yummy Circus , Defender's Quest (HD edition) , and the award-winning Papers, Please.

Haxe is a programming language that compiles to other programming languages (everything from C++ to Javascript to Python), has been around for about 10 years and is quite powerful. OpenFL is a hardware-accelerated cross-platform reimplementation of the Flash API, built on top of Haxe (but does not have the Flash player's performance and security limitations and has nothing to do with Adobe), and is built on a low-level cross-platform layer called Lime, which can be used separately for those who have no need for a Flash-like API. This could eventually lead to console compatibility for engines that are built on top of Haxe/OpenFL, such as Away3D, Stencyl, HaxeFlixel, and HaxePunk.

Six console targets are planned: WiiU, PS4, XBox One, PSVita, 3DS, and PS3; footage of demos running on the WiiU was presented at the talk and are included in the linked article.

Comment Re:Treadmill desk (Score 2) 204

I've had a treadmill desk for about a year now. I started with a standing desk but found my legs got too stiff being still so I hacked up a $150 used treadmill. This has completely changed my work life. I had horrible back problems which made me question if I could continue as a developer. I had tried different chairs, desks, postures and had some success with software timers which forced me to move around every so often. After a few weeks of the treadmill desk my back was feeling better. After a few months all problems were gone.

I usually walk between 1-2 mph and have no problem typing and concentrating. The main drawback is that my work station is the treadmill desk and I can't sit. When I get tired I take a laptop to the couch (I work from home) but I'd rather be able to stay in one place were my good setup is. There are some desks which raise and lower mechanically which I plan to get at some point. http://www.treaddesk.com/">This company has some but they are expensive.

With the addition of an arduino I also geek out with data from the treadmill.

Comment Re:Small business (Score 1) 2115

Please correct me if I'm wrong but isn't any money that is put into the business tax deductible? Meaning if a company makes 400k and puts 200k back into the business they pay taxes on only 200k (The profits). As I see it, higher taxes are an incentive to spend more money on the business because you don't pay taxes on that money.
