While I remain agnostic of Elon's argument I would like to know what is the matter with this absolutism of vision. Who ever said that the entirety of our 'reality' has to be simulated? That's just BS. You have to think in human terms, our extremely limited senses can be easily simulated, ever wondered why we have almost no conscious perception or control over our 'inner' biological functions? Simple: code optimization. Do the planets/outer space really need to 'exist' while you have breakfast ? Not really. There are just a handful of items that need to 'read' the universe... namely telescopes and such, and most of them are just displaying visible light 'images' of what's outside. So easy to cheat... Do atoms really need to be simulated during your daily activities? Looking at what we can do with CGI and so forth times 10k years, not really. And the list could go on forever. I find disturbing this 'modern' trend of black or white vision. It's either all or bust.... Hollywood films too much?

Submission + - Mass surveillance silences minority opinions, according to study

sittingnut writes: According to a study(pdf) by Elizabeth Stoycheff, from Wayne State University, published in Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, and referred to in Washington Post, "knowing one is subject to surveillance and accepting such surveillance as necessary, act as moderating agents in the relationship between one’s perceived climate of opinion and willingness to voice opinions online." In other words, "knowledge of government surveillance causes people to self-censor their dissenting opinions online". This study adds to the well-researched phenomenon, known as “spiral of silence”, of people suppressing unpopular opinions to fit in, by explicitly examining how government surveillance affects self-censorship. Participants who claimed, they don't break any laws and don't have anything to hide, and tended to support mass surveillance as necessary for national security, were the most likely to silence their minority opinions.

I appreciate the work people like deGrasse are doing...but they should remember we don't need to create a generation of closed minded did-you-publish-1000-papers-already 'scientists' ... or it will be worse than religion... sometimes world changing discoveries still come out one 'crazy' genius or even by the amateur botanist.. science should be inflexible in repeatability and logic, but not carry other dogmas or elitist behaviours..

I would put my money on the guys at General Fusion (http://www.generalfusion.com/) ....it seems a less tricky way to extract energy and create pulsed fusion blasts rather than the other methods. Most of the tokamak design are focused on sustaining plasma, they don't even go past how to extract high energy from it, even the ITER is highly speculative in that regard. The acoustic/mechanical system has the energy extracting part already built-in in the plasma creation stage (the molten lead is used both to propagate the pressure waves and as heat exchange medium to run a steam turbine.... If I had some spare millions I'd definitely try this one eheh:)
