Submission + - Florida Man Sues G.M. and LexisNexis Over Sale of His Cadillac Data (nytimes.com)

An anonymous reader writes: When Romeo Chicco tried to get auto insurance in December, seven different companies rejected him. When he eventually obtained insurance, it was nearly double the rate he was previously paying. According to a federal complaint filed this week seeking class-action status, it was because his 2021 Cadillac XT6 had been spying on him. Modern cars have been called “smartphones with wheels,” because they are connected to the internet and packed with sensors and cameras. According to the complaint, an agent at Liberty Mutual told Mr. Chicco that he had been rejected because of information in his “LexisNexis report.” LexisNexis Risk Solutions, a data broker, has traditionally kept tabs for insurers on drivers’ moving violations, prior insurance coverage and accidents.

When Mr. Chicco requested his LexisNexis file, it contained details about 258 trips he had taken in his Cadillac over the past six months. His file included the distance he had driven, when the trips started and ended, and an accounting of any speeding and hard braking or accelerating. The data had been provided by General Motors — the manufacturer of his Cadillac. In a complaint against General Motors and LexisNexis Risk Solutions filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, Mr. Chicco accused the companies of violation of privacy and consumer protection laws. The lawsuit followsa report by The New York Timesthat, unknown to consumers, automakers have been sharing information on their driving behavior with the insurance industry, resulting in increased insurance rates for some drivers. LexisNexis Risk Solutions, and another data broker called Verisk, claim to have real-world driving behavior from millions of cars.

Submission + - Defcon was officially cancelled then un-cancelled. (defcon.org)

sizzlinkitty writes: Caesars resorts have cancelled a long standing contract with the organizers of DEF CON without cause beyond "a strategy change". DEF CON 32 will now be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, making it difficult for everyone who has traditionally stayed in the hotels of the conference to make it to the conference before noon. It is unclear what is going to happen with the discounted hotel room blocks that have previously made DEF CON affordable for everyone.

DEF CON was canceled.

After a great 25 year relationship Caesars abruptly terminated their contract with DEF CON, leaving us with no venue for DC 32, and just about seven months to Con!

We don’t know why Caesars canceled us, they won’t say beyond it being a strategy change and it is not related to anything that DEF CON or our community has done. This kind of no-notice cancellation of a contract is unheard of in the conference business. The parting is confusing, but amicable.

So now we have a challenge. Without a venue, will we be able to UN-Cancel DEF CON 32 before time runs out?

Hackers are flexible. We find solutions. We need a space that can handle an event our size, and configurable enough to accommodate our content. We need a location close to our announced dates, and with super short notice... No small feat.

We immediately scrambled a venue strike team to Las Vegas. Floors were walked. Meetings were held. Hands were shook and options weighed. When the smoke cleared, the field narrowed to one obvious choice and we began forging the requisite agreements.

W00T! DEF CON Is UN-CANCELED!

DEF CON 32 will still be August 8-11 2024, but now held at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) with workshops and training at the Sahara.

DEF CON 32 will be an adventure where we can try things not possible in our old Casino Hotel spaces. What specifically you ask? Well we are still learning all the specifics but we will have more space, a proper food court, and the largest indoor venue LCD wall in the country.

There are still many questions to be answered, and we have started a live FAQ section on the Forums for DEF CON 32 where we will be updating questions and answers. The initial FAQ is located here: https://forum.defcon.org/node/...

I look forward to seeing everyone this summer, the start of a new DEF CON era!

Let's also make it carcinogenous and declare that it contains peanuts.

Idk exactly when it started but suddenly everyone feels so much stupider than they used to.

Submission + - Meta To Release Open-Source Commercial AI Model To Compete With OpenAI, Google (zdnet.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is set to release a commercial version of LLaMA, its open-source large language model (LLM) that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to generate text, images, and code. LLaMA, which stands for Large Language Model Meta AI, was publicly announced in February as a small foundational model, and made available to researchers and academics. Now, the Financial Times is reporting that Meta is prepared to release the commercial version of the model, which would enable developers and businesses to build applications using the foundational model.

Since it's an open-source AI technology, commercial access to LLaMA gives businesses of all sizes the opportunity to adapt and improve the AI, accelerating technological innovation across various sectors and potentially leading to more robust models. Meta's LLaMA is available in 7, 13, 33, and 65 billion parameters, compared to ChatGPT's LLM, GPT-3.5, which has been confirmed to have 175 billion parameters. OpenAI hasn't said how many parameters GPT-4 has, but it's estimated to have over 1 trillion parameters — the more parameters, the better the model can understand input and generate appropriate output.

Though open-source AI models already exist, launching Meta's LLaMA commercially is still a significant step, due to it being larger than many of the available open-source LLMs on the market, and the fact that it is from one of the biggest tech companies in the world. The launch means Meta is directly competing with Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Google, and that competition could mean significant advancements in the AI field. Closed or proprietary software, like that used in OpenAI's ChatGPT, has drawn criticism over transparency and security.
