Vigile writes: "Ray tracing is still thought of as the 'holy grail' for real-time imagery but because of the intense amount of calculations required it has been plagued with long frame render times. This might soon change, at least according to an article from Daniel Pohl, a researcher at Intel. With upcoming many-core processors like Intel's Larrabee he believes that real-time ray tracing for games is much closer than originally thought thanks in large part to the efficiency it allows with spatial partitioning and reflections when compared to current rasterization techniques. Titles like Valve's Portal are analyzed to see how they could benefit from ray tracing technology and the article on PC Perspective concludes with the difficulties combing the two rendering techniques as well as a video of the technology in action."

  • The examples given are a little.. silly. Is this piece aimed towards game makers? They already know the technical side of things, the benefits and the problems with RT.
    I actually feel that the article is aimed towards "normal user" - just enough BS to make their eyes glaze over. (Really? We can simply redirect our camera rays somewhere else to render a visibility portal? Really?) Get them excited, so they'll tell their friends about how *real* our video games will be with RT..

    How much longer do you think it will be before any this all goes under an NDA and we won't even have the Ray Tracing is "OMGWTFRTBBQ good for games" ---> "No it isn't your a moron" arguments anymore and will have to go back to arguing grits versus polenta.
  • Its an interesting article which points out some of the basic advantages of ray tracing over rasterization. I would be rather curious to hear a counterpoint from the folks at AMD or NVIDIA concerning raytracing vs. rasterization though.

Any given program will expand to fill available memory.
