NJ Hewitt writes: "Florida scientists have grown a brain in a petri dish and taught it to pilot an F-22 jet simulator." The brain, with neurons connected to 60 electrodes, at first had no ability to pilot the fighter jet, but slowly learned and can now reliably navigate through even hurricane-force winds in the simulator.

  • That's pretty impressive, although it doesn't go into detail about the simulation involved in the flying. Does the "brain" have to avoid and obstacles or is it purely just reacting to keep the jet level?

    But its a good start in producing artificial intelligence in an organic fashion rather than with silicon chips!

      I was wondering how the brain understands the objective of keeping the plane in the air. Then I thought, perhaps when the plane crashes the brain gets no stimuli for a period. I assume the brain prefers stimuli to no stimuli, so keeping the plane in the air is ideal. After the plane resets it understands the goal and from there will attempt to become better at keeping it level.

        That's kinda what I had assumed, although I thought that perhaps if the plane crashed it would receive a negative stimuli, perhaps a sort of "pain"? Nobody/thing wants pain, therefore you will strive to avoid it, thus getting better at the flying.
