Submission + - SPAM: Michelle Obama at WWDC: Bad Math Teachers Drove My Daughters Out of STEM 1

theodp writes: Business Insider's Troy Wolverton reports that Apple kept the press out of Michelle Obama's speech to developers at WWDC17. Apple, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment on if or how much Obama was paid for the talk, also noted, "This session will not be live streamed or recorded for rebroadcast." Not surprisingly, members of the iPhone-toting audience still managed to capture the event for posterity, including the former First Lady's explanation to Apple VP of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives Lisa Jackson that "too many girls take themselves out of STEM when they're 10, or 8, or 11...because of a bad situation with a teacher or how we teach these subjects in school...We've been teaching math and science the same way since I was born, and that's too long. We haven't figured out how to make these girls successful — that's on us." She continued (video @34:02), "I have two daughters now who are perfectly good in math, but they had one or two bad math teachers and they are done. That's what happens to girls. They walk away from tech and science. And there's something going on that is not just about the girls. There's something going on with how these subjects are taught." Her remarks echo those made by President Obama in a late-2014 interview, in which the President lamented that his daughters hadn't taken to coding the way he'd like, adding that "part of what's happening is that we are not helping schools and teachers teach it in an interesting way."
