Submission + - SPAM: Top MOBA Games for 2017 (Updated)

stevemacqu writes: League of Legends
This game tops the chart of best MOBA games out there. The reason? Well, League of Legends (LoL) has generated $1 billion in revenue in 2014. And, it’s not just the money that propels it to the top of the charts. It’s more to do with the game play and experience that League of Legends provides to players through PvP format.

A team of 5 players battle 5 other players to achieve victory over the other. Launched in the year 2009, League of Legends was created by a developer that originally played a huge role in creating the infamous mod DOTA from Warcraft 3. As of now, League of Legends has, on average, 25 million users per day.

Each player chooses from over 123 different characters aka “champions” and gradually enhances their abilities and skills as the game goes on. League of Legends has different modes; however, the most played are the normal matches in which a team’s goal is to destroy the Nexus of the enemy team. League of Legends is also a sough-after competitive game with a prize pool of more than $2 million in 2014. League of Legends is a MUST play game for any MOBA gamer.

Dota 2
Defense of the Ancients 2 or Dota 2 takes the second spot on our list of best MOBA games. Being a competitive game like LoL, Dota 2 tops the chart of the games with biggest prize pools with $10 million in 2014. Dota 2 is the sequel of the original game mod DotA that was released as a map created by Icefrog. It was a huge hit with gamers and it started to be played on a professional level.

With even better graphics and game play than the prequel, Dota 2 is a game with a fan following of millions. Continuous updates and patches allow the game to hold on to its competitive edge and excitement. With a pool of 110 heroes to choose from, the players can create different strategies and combinations to overcome their enemy team. Even if you do not consider yourself a competitive gamer, Dota 2 is something you can’t get enough of.

Gigantic is everything you might have not expected from a MOBA. A very artistic approach to a MOBA game has been given through Gigantic. However, the visuals are not the only thing that will make you attracted to the MOBA. Gigantic is contrary to the classic MOBA type and consist of only one lane. This is where everything happens and teams gather kills to spawn a Guardian to fight for them against the opponents.

Smite is a third person MOBA developed for XBOX one and Microsoft platforms. This MOBA allows players to select a mythological god to fight in a battle arena. Match is won by utilizing the god’s powers as employing different strategies against the other team’s god and AI minions (bots).

The battle arena is divided into two teams starting from 3 to 5 players. The game’s progression allows increased abilities and skills for every god. A total of 62 gods are available to choose from, with each of them having their own set of skills that can be mastered. God’s can be chosen based on the requirements of the team as a support, carry, or tank. The graphics and response time of the game are really good and provide a game play that is hard to find in third person MOBA games.

Heroes of Newerth
The original idea of Heroes of Newerth (HoN) was inspired from Warcraft 3’s custom map DotA which is evident from the similarities of many heroes. Heroes of Newerth was initially launched as a MOBA that is ACTUALLY a game, since the original DotA was just a custom map.

Having better game play and graphics than the original DotA, HON was able to attract a lot of players even in its beta stage. Heroes of Newerth also has a hero pool of 123 characters to choose from with the ultimate goal being the destruction if the World Tree or the Hellbourne. Heroes of Newerth has a score of 76 on Metacritic, and received an audience award in the year of 2010. The game was also nominated for the MTV game awards in the same year.

Heroes of the Storm
A highly-anticipated game in 2015, Heroes of the Storm (HotS) MOBA game is the first one to be released by Blizzard. However, Blizzard itself does not call the game MOBA since according to them Heroes of the Storm is ARTS (Action Real Time Strategy) – something more than MOBA.

For now, Heroes of the Storm sits in the MOBA category since the game play fells and seems like a MOBA. With the beta phase getting more than 9 million players to signup, Heroes of the Storm is a top priority for all Blizzard fans that are anxiously waiting for the first MOBA by the company.

The first FPS MOBA game of its class, Overwatch is an upcoming title from Blizzard and is expected to enter the BETA stage very soon. The game play of Overwatch consists of two teams having a maximum of six players. Same as other MOBA games, Overwatch allows players to select one character from several, with each character having a unique class and set of abilities. The roles in Overwatch are divided into four categories: Offensive, Defensive, Support and Tanks, with each of them having their own perks and weaknesses.

A new introduction in Overwatch is the in-game change of characters that allows players to change their hero. Two game modes are currently revealed in Overwatch, first being Payload, in which one team must take a bomb to a delivery point and the other team has to stop them. Second mode is the point capture which is similar to flag capturing modes that are common in FPS multiplayer games. Overwatch is scheduled to enter the beta phase in the coming months.
