An anonymous reader writes: According to this post in the Skype Linux Forums Skype tries to read out the /etc/passwd as well as some other files and directories. At this time, there is no official statement from Skype concerning this matter.

  • This just shows how important it is to use AppArmor profiles in proprietary closed-source applications in Linux, restricting them to access only the files they are supposed to. We never know what they are up to. Even if this turns out to be a misuse instead of an abuse of those files, the fact that networked applications have access to all files in the system makes them very attractive as remote 0-day vulnerability targets.

If you push the "extra ice" button on the soft drink vending machine, you won't get any ice. If you push the "no ice" button, you'll get ice, but no cup.
