Submission + - A Modest Proposal, re: Beta vs. Classic 19

unitron writes: Dice wants to make money off of what they paid for--the Slashdot name--, or rather they want to make more money off of it than they are making now, and they think the best way to do that is to turn it into SlashingtonPost.

They should take this site and give it a new name. Or get Malda to let them use "Chips & Dips".

Leave everything else intact, archives, user ID database, everything except the name.

Then use the Beta code and start a new site and give it the name, and they can have what they want without the embarrassment of having the current userbase escape from the basement or the attic and offend the sensibilities of the yuppies or hipsters or metrosexuals or whoever it is that they really want for an "audience".

I think there are very valid and real trademark concerns over the use of -- I'm suggesting as the replacement. I picked up the domain, to prevent someone else from just hijacking it for ransom if the altslashdot group wanted to go with it. But I'm not looking to sell it -- I'll transfer it to the foundation if only to help out with the project.

I salute and appreciate the effort you're making, while hoping it'll be unnecessary, as I'd prefer to keep everything else and let them take away the name and give us another one, as opposed to having to start over from scratch.

I guess we'll have to see if enough of us stay away in droves to create a slashcottpocolypse or not to see if Dice notices that it's being slapped upside of the head with a clue-by-four.

    • Just as a warning: 'Altslash' sounds, well, sexual. 'Slash' is a popular term for erotic fan fiction, and putting 'alt' in front of it just makes it sound dirtier.

      • Maybe there can be a trade? 'Altslash' sounds like it would drive exactly the sort of traffic Dice is looking for. :-P
    • I also plan on making a Slashdot-inspired site. The website will be called Pipedot [] and be decidedly non-profit. The motto will be "News for nerds, without the corporate slant." Get it? A pipe character looks like a slash without the slant!

Regardless of how successful any of these alternatives become, the community will benefit for having several "escapes routes" for when Dice finally places that last straw on our backs. The official Slashdot site may be forced to actually listen to the community, or risk us

While I'm wary of anything with "slash" in the name for TM issues, if it were considered kosher to do so, I'd rather see "", if only because the backslash character is used in a variety of languages as a comment character, and naturally, commentary is what makes slashdot tick in the first place.

That it sounds quite a bit like "backlash" doesn't hurt either.

  • Unitron, you're looking for feedback on this idea. It's a little hard to follow and understand, but it sounds like you want to move to another URL (keeping all users and data and comments and stories intact). The would be used for the beta site and for whatever Dice wants to build there. If I understand you correctly.

I don't think the Slashdot crowd would appreciate that. I know I wouldn't. I'd prefer if they put whatever Dice really wants onto another URL (or a sub link or so

It's not Unitron, it's unitron, and always has been, here and everywhere else, and the only time it's not is on those other sites where someone else registered the name first long ago and then never used it and I had to come up with an alternate, like the_unitron, or something like that.

Otherwise, my only alias is the name with which I was born.

And I'd rather not have to give up having the Slashdot name attached to the Slashdot experience, but...

Apparently Dice thinks the Slashdot name has value, and wants

      • It's not Unitron, it's unitron, and always has been

Well, then... my bad on all fronts. :)

If I have to choose between giving up the name "" and giving up everything about the name of which I've been a part since October of 1998, it's no contest.

If that's the choice, I'm happy for Dice to take the name and leave the rest, since it seems like they'll be flushing the rest before long anyway.

I understand how you feel. I've been here a very long time -- like many others, longer than my UID suggests. I think since about 2003. I just have bad vibes about this jolt from Dice in all respects. We (the community) will figure something out. It may not be what we want 100% because of so many different opinions, but today's Slashdot isn't exactly what we want either. I'll see you around. :)

I'm sure such a site could still sell enough advertising to break even and a little extra, as long as they sought out advertisers who understand who we are and want to reach exactly those people.

I'll just throw something out there as someone who works in the media business. I'm in editorial, mind you, so the money side of it is not my thing and I mostly pay no attention to it. But I have worked in offices with people whose job it was to get advertisers to spend money. And just based on the gossip I've heard around the water cooler, the general feeling among sales types is that Slashdot couldn't sell an ad to the Pope on Christmas, I'm sorry to say. The perception is that this community has massive

And also, I'm looking for feedback, but mostly I'm looking to get it out of the Firehose and into the set of submissions with the green bar at the top instead of a gray one, so that it actually has a chance of being brought to the attention of the corporate overlords.

  • dice $ ./beta
    Segmentation Fault

  • []

and help get it out of the Firehose.

    • Seems like DICE is now actively trying to kill all dissenting submissions by marking them as spam. They've done it to this and to the midnight thread.
  • But they don't care. They've already written /. off as a bad joke: []
