Ask Slashdot: Opinion of slashdot beta?

  • It would be nice to have a rational discussion about the Beta somewhere.

This is pretty heartfelt to me as I've been here since the beginning (and a user since 1999
as far as I can tell).

Also, I paid for slashdot... and my credit isn't used up.

None of them have comment systems as good as slashdot CLASSIC, but it doesn't look like that'll be around for long. A shame because that's what kept visiting here for 14+ years.

The slashdot mobile beta site just doesn't work for me. On both mobile and desktop I always scroll through the stories and open interesting links in new tabs that load in the background, and then I can go back and flip through them at will. But long-presses (at least on Android browsers) are blocked and turned into normal clicks instead. Being

Doesn't work for me either, I don't get the desktop version on my large phone even though I asked for it and the mobile version simply isn't showing any comments, not that it matters since the beta ruins the whole comment system, can't see uid numbers, it's a horrible layout, stupid colours - grey on grey, as if it isn't hard enough to read text on a smart phone.

What makes slashdot great is there is often good debate in the comments, you don't get that so much on other sites. I don't think Dice understand that.

Not to mention the user comments summary appears to be gone.

[] is one of the bookmarks that I (somewhat narcissistically) monitor to see who has replied to my comments, so I can reply back to them even if it's a day or three later. Much like I'm doing now with you. Also, I noticed that I put in a plug to Nixie Pixel on the article about female role models and she actually responded to it a few days later. Whee!

The beta user profile even more narcissistically only shows my

    I've just now registered "".

I intend to run a site much like Slashdot used to be - better articles, less decoration and less "in your face" functionality. I'm revewing and getting comfortable with slashcode right now.

I'm looking for volunteers to help with setup and running the site. If the site becomes profitable, I intend to hire from the pool of volunteers. If you've ever wanted to participate in a site like Slashdot, here's your chance!

I'm particularly in need of people who can: .) Set up and manage a high-traffic site (servers, load-balancers, data sites, &c) .) Edit story submissions .) HTML, CSS, and script creation/bugfix/repair

  • Sorry. I know a lot of work went into it. Not sure what the target audience was. Lots of noise, little signal: info per window size is way lower. Please, what is motivating this? What do you guys think is so failing in the current site that the new beta so succeeds in fixing? Not a rhetorical question, I really want to know.

WTF is the thinking behind this?

The wages of sin are high but you get your money's worth.
