Submission + - USPS rejects FOIA request for ZIP Code list: "proprietary business information" (weblaws.org) 1

An anonymous reader writes: The U.S. Postal Service denied my FOIA request for a list of current ZIP Codes, because the information is “proprietary business information” and its release would not be considered a “good business practice”.

I requested the list in order to make the information available to free of charge to others, and to build open-government apps.

  • Since when can't one get the list of Zip codes? It's been some years, but one used to be able to download the list in several formats. What gives?

I searched at the Post Office site, no dice, just individual look-ups; searching on "zip code list" and "zip code database" both got me each a minimum of a handful of possibly full, useful lists - but one has to plow through each site for what's what and terms and conditions. Sheese, this sucks.
