Submission + - Safer Cloud: Public or Private? Which one to Opt for?

seanwayne writes: Choosing which cloud platform is better for your business is a tedious task. However, the task can be made simple if each one of it is characterised and analyzed individually. In case of cloud computing methodology, public, private and hybrid cloud platforms are three forms, which cloud model as a whole offers its end users. Nevertheless, here we would focus on two of the major cloud forms including private and public. Let us take each of them individually for a clear understanding.

Public Cloud Model

Public Cloud is a platform that invites businesses to store their data and vital information on the public cloud server to avoid IT chaos that is a common problem in organizations. Some of the good and live examples of public cloud model are Google Docs and Microsoft's Windows Azure Platform. Both of them offer a virtual environment to businesses to promote their products and services to their potential customers without investing too much in the IT infrastructure. With it IaaS or Infrastructure-as-a-Service gets simplified. In case Google Docs, the entrepreneurs can send e-mail notifications and keep a track of their data round the clock, while also having the liberty to access the data from anywhere and at any point of time around the world.

Above mentioned points are the basic fundamentals of what public cloud has to offer to their users. Positive factors that usually gets transformed using public cloud model are as follows:

Drastic change in the Scalability Levels

Because of less software and hardware chaos, production of ongoing daily work operations increases almost 99.99%.

Agile Development

Agility comes with good scalability levels and with public cloud platform agility comes automatically.

Besides these positive points, one big drawback of public cloud model is that users are unaware about where their data is actually stored. This means the geographic location of the stored data is hard to find because the public cloud offers a vast space on the cloud server. This very reason also gives rise to security threats like data leak and access of data through unauthorized parties.

Private Cloud Model

Private Cloud model is a cloud platform that offers equal storage space on the virtual server but in an enclosed environment. By stating enclosed environment we probably mean that the security threats are minimum in this case. Like, public cloud data that is stored on private cloud server can also be accessed from anywhere in the world and at any point of the hour. Private cloud seems to be a better option for business entities that don't wish to share their personal data with the third parties and the one that wish to control and monitor their cloud servers on their own. In case of public cloud model, because users don't know who is actually monitoring their confidential assets, the cloud model is thus, not so preferred for storing vast amount of data on the public cloud server.

Which Cloud Model is Suitable for Businesses?

In the current scenario and as per the studies, the private cloud architecture is much in demand due to its secured and safe environment. However, the choice of storing data in both the cloud forms depends entirely on businesses and their requirements; private cloud model no doubt excels in the characteristics over public cloud model.
