An anonymous reader writes: Today NASA announced the discovery of the smallest alien planet ever found around a Sun-like star. The planet, known as Kepler-37b, is smaller than Mercury and nearly as small as the Earth's Moon. The size of Kepler-37b was determined by an international team of scientists who measured the precise size of the parent star with a technique known as "asteroseismology", leading to the absolute size of the planet with high accuracy. The seismic analysis was funded by a crowd-funding initiative known as the Pale Blue Dot project, which gathers $10 contributions from thousands of donors to support scientific research on the parent stars of Kepler planetary systems.
