An anonymous reader writes: An Israeli engineering firm has developed a breakthrough battery technology that can near instantly recharge the battery of an electric vehicle. Long battery recharge times have long been a barrier to widespread adoption of electric vehicles. The BBC article reviews this new technology.

      I think the difference is that the cars are actually starting to hit the road. Unfortunately, the summary is terribly misleading. The battery technology is definitely not "instantly recharge". They swap the battery pack out (and then recharge them while the car and driver drive off with a different pack).

      Interesting concept. Not at all a technology breakthrough.

  • This is just the Better Place "battery swap" system. After five years of hype, they're actually deploying this in Israel. They have only about 300 cars using it, most of which are used by their own employees. They raised about $700 million to get this far, and have blown through most of it.

    It seems to more or less work, but the cost of the infrastructure per car is very high. So high that the whole thing may just be a con.
