The site uses its Ashburn, Virginia data centre for most traffic, but relies on another in Tampa, Florida for certain backend services such as databases. Despite having two fibre cables running between the two facilities, a cut cable led to a complete blackout of the online encyclopaedia. Wikimedia itself is baffled by the situation and has asked its network provider what is going on and why resiliency measures failed."
