Submission + - Google not to release full Android 4.0 source code 3

calc writes: Jean-Baptiste Queru, tech lead of Android at Google has confirmed that the full Android 4.0 source code will not be released.

"Like we did for all Honeycomb release, this is NOT the full source tree for IceCreamSandwich, these are only the GPL parts that are in the SDK (along with a few associated files), and they're not enough to build the whole IceCreamSandwich for a device."

Google not to release full Android 4.0 source code

I believe that Google had at some point said Honeycomb was not released as open source due to the fear that Android phone makers would try to shoehorn it onto phones when it was a tablet only release resulting in a poor user experience. I wonder what the new excuse will be for why they are not releasing ICS as open source...

  • Excuse me but the announcement says that what is being released is not the AOSP, it doesn't say that they are not going to release the AOSP.

However, if that turns out to be the case, then I will seriously reconsider using and recommending my friends to use Android.

It's true its not 100% spelled out at the moment, but the message said they are releasing ICS like they did with all Honeycomb releases which was not the full AOSP.
