tetrahedrassface writes: When the Sociolinguistics Symposium met earlier this month swearing scholar Timothy Jay revealed that an increase in child swearing is directly related to an increase in adult swearing. It seems that vulgarity is increasing as pop culture continues to popularize vulgarities. The blame lies with media, public figures, politicians, but mostly ourselves. From the article: 'Children as young as two are now dropping f-bombs, with researchers reporting that more kids are using profanity — and at earlier ages — than has been recorded in at least three decades.'

  • The list of words that are considered profane is arbitrary, and their increased usage is indicative of desensitization. Desensitization and a corresponding end to the media censorship of said words seems like a *good* thing.

  • When I was a kid I was too scared to swear because there was a genuine threat that I would get a good smack. There is no fear anymore, that is why the newest generations are largely delinquent.
  • It's hilarious when young children curse, at least for now. It's something you don't expect a kid to say. Once we finally get over ourselves and understand that words and just words then nobody will care anymore and hopefully some clever fellows will create or popularize new exclamations so we can just drop the same old tired ones we're using now.
  • I remember my father gathering his three children together and he ordered "I want you kids cut out all this goddamn swearing around here!". After we pulled ourselves together after several minutes of unbridled laughter, we pointed out the obvious source of this behavior. If he didn't stop we wouldn't and for him to stop swearing would be like changing his native tongue. The issue never arose again. Swearing? I'd worry more about my children and the rapid influx of cheap, 80% pure Afghani heroin that's floo
