Nasdaq Tells Yandex, Other Russian Firms of Plan To Delist Stocks (reuters.com) 34

The Nasdaq stock exchange has informed Russian Internet giant Yandex and e-commerce firm Ozon that their stocks will be delisted, the companies said on Wednesday, more than a year after trading in their securities was suspended. Reuters reports: Nasdaq suspended trading in the securities of a number of companies operating in Russia days after Moscow despatched tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022. Yandex and Ozon said they would appeal the decision. Neither company has fallen under Western sanctions, although some of Yandex's top management have. Recruiter Headhunter and payment service provider Qiwi were also notified of their anticipated delisting from Nasdaq, the two companies said.

Putin is doing this because he's a tired old man getting ready to die and this was supposed to be his gift to Russia. It was an incredibly boneheaded thing to do given the actual state of their military and has basically turned them into a non-entity on the national stage. Best case scenario they get some worthless dirt while all the good farmland stays with Ukraine and the likely scenario is that they'll be grinded in the pulp by Europe and America's weapons.

The United States is flirting with dictatorship and it's coming elections. Most dictators including Putin or legitimately elected at least once before they seize power. If you don't want to suffer the same fate as Russia keep that in mind if you're an American. Let's not get ourselves we know who the people going to become dictators are.
    • You don't understand US democracy very well. US democracy is holding solid.

Trump won in 2016 because the conservatives couldn't stand Hillary Clinton. He lost in 2020 because a few percent of conservative voters realized that they had made a massive mistake and switched their votes, which was enough to tip the scales over to Biden. And despite Trump's full-court-press to overturn the election, he got nowhere with the public (beyond a few thousand idiots), nowhere with the military, nowhere with the court

Meanwhile in Florida their governor is threatening librarians with felony convictions of they have a book in your library he doesn't like. Virtually every state in the Union has right-wing extremists passing laws making it a crime to be gay or transsexual in public. He would have taken over a conservative district as well if they were consistently delivering as miserable educational outcomes as Huston has been. Spin it all you want but the TRUTH is Huston's leadership was either incompetent, unwilling to take the actions needed, or not focused on the things students will need to succeed.

As to Florida librarians this entire books things has reached hysterical proportions. Many of the materials that reasonably people really are pornographic in nature. Nikki Fried even

You're inventing boogie men, this is same line of think as kidnapers in white vans handing out candy. I'm not saying there aren't awful human's in the world, because there are, but the overwhelming majority are just fine. They want to get up, go about their day, and generally be left alone. The radical Left or Progressives as you call them aren't running rough sod over anything. They're simply asking that we human treat other humans with respect and dignity. This is true. One of the first things the Nazis did when they came to power was to attack clinics helping LGBTQ people. Trashed them, threw all the books and research papers in the street and set fire to them. Part of Hitler's attack on "lives not worth living".

The invasion was driven by fear, and if you take a closer look at the topographical map of Russia, it will become immediately obvious what was the driving motivation behind that assault. Russia fears an invasion from the West. Always has, always will. And no, that nobody gives a fuck about them doesn't matter one bit to them.

Now, if you look at Russia, you'll notice that its north and south borders are fairly safe. Mostly due to nature. Yo

Bullshit. It was driven by Putin's maniacal desire to resurrect the corpse of the Soviet Union. He doesn't recognize Ukraine's existence and the daily mouthpieces spewing their hate on Russian tv are his attack dogs saying exactly that. That is all. His excuses about NAFO and being under threat are just that, excuses.

One can see this in his recent warnings to Georgia about the protests [newsweek.com] over a recent law foreign agent law modeled after Russia's own law. He warned Georgia that they should see what happened in Ukraine after they protested to move toward Europe and freedom rather than embrace Russia and a dictatorship. it doesn't get much clea than that.

        • The whole East Bloc was driven by that Russian invasion fear. Take a closer look at the European map, again, its topography. You'll find that they had a pretty easily defensible position, with the only really border that had to be defended and wasn't made impassable by terrain was the one going right down the split Germany, and even there, rivers made defending that fairly easy, and you could even lose the whole GDR before it becomes tougher to defend within Poland.

Sure, Putin's hubris of resurrecting the Soviet Union was certainly his personal motivator. But the invasion fear is the key element behind it.

            Nope, it's just pure ego.

Dictators instill fear into the populace to justify their actions. Putin saying it's topography and crap is the reason they'll tell the Russian people. But it's not true, it's just the reason Putin is saying "you guys need to suffer but you will suffer for the greater glory that is Russia."

      • Not to forget, someone must be insane to attack a nuke armed state (which Russia is).

Even if Russia has only a token military force (say 10,000 in army to march in parades and just patrol the border), it will be enough for a solid defence, cos they will be backed by nukes.

So I don't understand the "Russian fear" about Nato invading them or other bullshit.

And if someone tried to invade Russia and Russia nuked them in return, most of the world, if not the whole world will probably be supportive of the nuking

        • Nukes are a less convincing deterrence than they might look like. For the same reason Russia now keeps threatening to use them but won't use them: Two can play that game.

One thing is certain: A nation using a nuke is the international pariah. The use of a single nuke against whatever enemy for whatever reason is simply and plainly not something you can do. Because if they use a nuke against them, they could next use a nuke against me. Nobody will want to deal with that country anymore. Nobody. Actually, it

Don't forget stupidity. Putin is acting like this is still the mid-20th century and at any point, Europeans may launch a conventional invasion similar to Nazi Germany.

In reality, rivers, mountains, and large cities don't matter. Because any credible threat to Russia from the West

        • You can't take anything with air power. You can reduce everything to rubble that way, but in the end, conquest still happens in the good old manual way. Literally. You have to eventually send the infantry in.

Of course, Western military doctrine means bombing them back to the stone age, then mop up what's left with armor and have the infantry polish the rest. In the end, though, that only works if you have access to it. Infantry mobility is, despite all our advances, still fairly poor. Mountains and rivers s

I'm sure when you were formulating this theory in your head to sound smart you thought you were doing well, but given Russia has faced significant historic invasions from the South previously (Mongols, Ottomans), and has been in a shooting war with China to it's South as recently as the 1970s then I think it's pretty clear you're talking complete and absolute bollocks. There's ample scope to invade Russia from every country along it's entire Southern border.

Guess where these companies will go after they are forced to delist in the US?
