Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Now Also Elevated to Microsoft's Chairman (msn.com) 19

Microsoft Satya Nadella elevated as Microsoft chairman Satya Nadella "has been elevated as chairman of Microsoft, a recognition of how dramatically he has transformed the world's largest software maker as chief executive over the past seven years," reports the Times of India: He will continue to also hold the CEO position. This makes it the first time since 2000, when co-founder Bill Gates stepped down as CEO, that the same person is holding both positions, demonstrating the company's confidence in Nadella's ability to take it into the future.

In February 2014, when Nadella was appointed CEO, Microsoft's flagship Windows business was weakening, and the company was struggling with its failures in the mobile phone and internet search markets. Nadella, who grew up in Hyderabad and joined Microsoft in the U.S. in 1992, refocused the company around cloud computing and artificial intelligence, and instilled a greater sense of ownership among employees — moves that paid off handsomely. The company's share price has risen nearly 600% since 2014. And since the fourth quarter of 2018, Microsoft has frequently been the most valued publicly listed company in the world, with Apple the only other contender for that spot...

In December, in a filing to the U.S. stock market regulator SEC, the board heaped praise on Nadella for the way he navigated the company through the pandemic, and the manner in which he had transformed the company's culture... The board, the filing said, had asked Nadella to create additional focus on the culture of the organisation for fiscal year 2020 and is very pleased with the results that were achieved. "Based on poll data, 95% of employees feel proud to work at Microsoft. The board credits Mr Nadella for his tremendous progress driving cultural change across the organisation," it said.

The entire point of having these roles as sepate is that the CEO serves at the pleasure of the board.

And the facts that (a) "that's how MSFT has always done it" and (b) Nadella has done an amazing job running Microsoft, doesn't outweigh the 'poor governance' judgement.

Some financial institutions have been active in promoting separation of the Chairman and CEO roles, I don't know how MSFT stock is distributed across institutions, insiders, and 'regular stockholders' to know if a shareholder initiative to change this would have any chance of success.

Apparently MORE poor management of Microsoft?

I'm hoping Satya Nadella helps cause Microsoft management to be less sloppy.

The article mentions that the time he took over Windows was struggling for direction.

Releasing Windows 11 is long overdue but they're still a long way from catching Google's Chrome OS who are around version 91 by now.
To catch up they should skip a couple of versions and go straight to Windows 95.

    "Microsoft Satya Nadella"
Did he marry into the family?

  • Every time there is any sort of management change at Microsoft (which this really isn't) I think the same thing.... Bring back a windows phone. Would love to see MS in that arena again.
  • This Satya Nadella deserves congratulations and thanks for his work at Microsoft and all he has done to improve the software ecosystem. 07 Comander Nadella
    • Say the Russian Ransomware folks. Look at all the CVES and the need to hide what is being fixed. Sorry, the product is like Boeing, profit first, safety many steps behind or flicked to an outsourcer. Culture change hey? Does that mean they bucket out sun-par product, whatever it takes to get options. Maybe Windows 21 will include a 'PayBitcoinRansom' API.
  • 20 years ago, people on slashdot were mad at companies hiring H1Bs from India. People would mockingly say things like "Why doesn't the CEO replace himself with an H1B?" Well trolls, they heard you. Check out Microsoft, Google, Adobe, IBM, MasterCard etc. Hahaha. How is it even possible?

Nowadays I lol at the fools complaining they can't compete with robots. Seriously? The key to being successful has always been via ownership of things and profit-sharing. If you work, you are replaceable. If you act like a m

  • Are already dotnet shops - everyone else has been using AWS or GCP for their AI/ML capability. Are there startups who are not dotnet shops, using Azure? Similar story with Windows - those who arent already in the Microsoft Windows ecosystem tend to use Macs - is it only home users who care about Windows 11 or are there corporate features in the new version?

There are a number of industries where using a Mac is a non-starter; there simply isn't the rich software environment on MacOS that there is on Windows.
