The Latest Claim To Satoshi Nakamoto is the 'Stupidest One Yet' (thenextweb.com) 63

An anonymous reader shares a report: For years, Faketoshis have been fighting to claim the Bitcoin throne, trying to make us all believe they were responsible for the cryptocurrency's creation. But things took a different turn this weekend after an unknown person(s) decided it was time to reveal their identity as the 'real' Satoshi Nakomoto in a three-part blog post series. Possibly exhausted by peoples' previous attempts to do the same, and having noticed several significant inconsistencies in the person's writing, it didn't take long for Bitcoin Twitter to react and call Faketoshi's claims into question. The Latest Claim To Satoshi Nakamoto is the 'Stupidest One Yet'

  • It's irrelevant who, if any single person, is Satoshi Nakamoto.
I think Satoshi Nakamoto is a group of people in reality.

It is kind of a pseudo-AC where they have already logged in with an account, then posted anonymously, as opposed to posting without ever having logged in.

This must give the provider enough control over accounts to avoid having a content-hosting company dump them like 8-chan was dumped

And yet there are constant daily racist and various other hate speech posts by right-wing loons.

It's almost as if "the provider" tacitly supports such posts. Or perhaps openly supports it?

Not as much since they got rid of truly "anonymous cowards" and replaced it with the "pseudo-anonymous cowards". There are still lots of people who "are wrong", but I haven't really seen much of what I would call "hate speech" anymore. People can be (and frequently are) wrong without being bigots. Honestly, as sad as it is to see anonymous coward die, I think it has been a successful venture so far from what I've witnessed.

I agree, completely. Slashdot is much, much readable since that trash has been removed.

I'm disappointed to see anonymous AC die, but I am happy to see the quality of conversation on Slashdot go up 10 fold. One thing I noticed is the number of shitbrain oil/climate denial/anti-science/pro-corporation shill comments have reduced significantly.

                    LOL!

Global warming is a scam, and you'll be reminded of that the next time Slashdot shits out a story related to it.

                    • The hilarious part is that you think anybody will be "reminded" of anything other than that you're ranting at the clouds again. Again.

                  • I haven't noticed any difference. Slashdot has been dead for a long time. Almost no one posts here anymore. I am pro climate change btw. I find it boring when everything just stays the same. Bring on a new ice age!

              • Does it really matter what color is the shirt?

No, nor that of the person but you low IQ, victim-mentality chumps aren't fucking listening.

Since BC is pretty difficult to get right (mess that it is), very likely. A single individual would probably have had to do a number of tries until it worked.

    • Wrong. In reality Satoshi Nakamoto is a reasonably-priced tuna sandwich that exists outside of space and time.

    • He's really Wanker McFistmeat keeping Nerds smart enough not to buy lottery tickets, wanking on coin instead. It's better than grinding for a month to get the Elf Princess sword of pleasure, not that I would ever (cough)(cough)

      Nakamoto, Satoshi A

    • by mhkohne ( 3854 )

Of course it matters - having people believe you are Satoshi means you can get them to give you money for whatever hare-brained business scam you've come up with. See Craig Wright.

  • To anyone claiming to be Satoshi:

Show me you hold a secret that only the real Satoshi has, then I'll at least pay attention long enough to see if you are Satoshi or if you came by that secret some other way.

Until then, expect to be called a liar or if you are lucky, just ignored.

    • by gweihir ( 88907 )

Apparently, even in this situation, quite a few people think lying about this and styling themselves as Satoshi is profitable.

      • You are Satoshi Nakamura!

A lot of trolls on here will be annoyed when it turns out that MsMash is the true Satoshi and messiah of the block chain.

      • I like this story, because it would require that the editor functions are actually just a reprogrammed Eliza. It would explain so many things at once!

    • by cdsparrow ( 658739 ) on Monday August 19, 2019 @12:53PM (#59102464)

I always hate these stories about a new person claiming to be satoshi. Not like it matters anyway, but my understanding is that anyone who is actually the creator should have the encryption key for that big stash. So fairly easy to prove you are satoshi, just transfer a coin out of that wallet.

      • And if this is "the stupidest claim yet", why the hell did it make it to /.?

      • Bitcoin was created to be currency in a video game. There is no guarantee that the keys still exist.

It may even be that the current market for bitcoin would not have reached what it has unless those keys had been lost, because the profit motive to cash out would be huge, but would damage the market. Most real humans would be extracting that wealth if they could.

    • by ceoyoyo ( 59147 )

Just buy me a Bentley and I'll believe you.

  • Each Bitcoin address is essentially a symmetric digital key. The private key for that address can be used to sign a message that can then be verified with the public Bitcoin address.

All a person needs to do to prove they are Satoshi is to produce a contemporary message, signed with a private key belonging to one of the early Bitcoin blocks known to be associated with Satoshi.

    Signed message == irrefutable proof.

    Otherwise, STFU.

    • by gweihir ( 88907 )

Since many people do not understand the tech at all (and that includes the press), apparently these false claims are still profitable in some ways.

    • by yarbo ( 626329 )

Symmetric keys do not have private and public portions. If you have a key to encrypt it, you can also decrypt it. You do not make signatures with symmetric keys because anyone who can verify it can also produce it.

You're thinking of public key cryptography which has private/public key pairs.

My life has been too peaceful. I have lived fearless, not worried by theft, the kidnapping of my children for ransom or getting wrenched into giving up my private key. I need some excitement in my life. I need some ruthless danger, some endless media attention. I need the world to cower at my feet because insta-fame is what I have been missing up until this point.

I am Satosh ... psyche, I'm only Spiderman.

I do have to wonder what these idiots are thinking. Yeah I want fame, let me become notorious and have angry crowds examine my every life and word while media announces to the world how rich and stupid I am making me a huge target.

These people deserve everything they get.

    • I do have to wonder what these idiots are thinking.

In this case, the motivation is clearly outlined in his blog postings.

"I'll also introduce Tabula Rasa, my clean-slate vision for the future of Bitcoin."

He's looking for attention to promote his own cryptocurrency.

      • He's looking for attention to promote his own cryptocurrency.

Well he got some attention, most of it bad, anyone who trusts this new crypto is a fucken idiot.

        • Well he got some attention, most of it bad, anyone who trusts this new crypto is a fucken idiot.

          That's generally desirable to scammers.

But look, they were born that way, it is no excuse to victimize them.

          • Scammers need to be caught, convicted, and then imprisoned. Failing that, a good beating by other criminals is fine, like the Russian spammer king that was found beaten to death by hammers.

  • He self plagarized am earlier work of his for the bitcoin white paper. Regardless, if you listen to him (prob give it 20hrs of higher quality YouTube interviews and presentations) you'll learn more about bitcoin than from any other source. Global ledger, scaling. It also helps that Ian Grigg just cited Craig in his paper as Satoshi, Gavin Andresen and John Matonis both still hold their statements of Craig being Satoshi.
