Samsung Embarrassingly Partners With Fake Supreme (droid-life.com) 117

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Droid Life: Samsung was doing its song and dance in China today at an event where they announced the Galaxy A8s, their first phone equipped with an Infinity-O display, only to pause midway to announce a new partnership. Samsung claimed to be partnering with iconic streetwear brand Supreme. They invited a couple of gentlemen on stage to talk about the deal, including plans for Supreme to enter China next year with a big flagship store. The thing is, those dudes don't work for Supreme and Supreme has no presence in China, nor do they plan to head there next year.

Samsung appears to have been duped by a fake Supreme company or just doesn't care that anyone who pays attention to fashion will mock them for decades to come over this partnership. The Supreme that Samsung is partnering with is actually called Supreme Italia, which is a fake Supreme brand that is able to sell fake Supreme gear, thanks to some weird legal loophole or decision in Italy. They have no affiliation with the real Supreme. They are counterfeiters.
As for the Galaxy A8s, it too hasn't been very well received. Not only is it the first Samsung phone without a headphone jack, but it has a laser-drilled hole in the display for the front-facing camera sensor. It's not quite as obstructive as the iPhone X notch, but it still leaves a noticeable hole in the top left corner of the display.

If you don't care about fashion, you really should look up Supreme, because they are the most generic hilarious "fashion" company ever. Their logo is just "Supreme" in white letters with a red background, and their products are just generic products but with "Supreme" slapped on them. Like, literally, they sell "Supreme" bricks - as in, a clay brick that they branded - and stuff like that. Their streetwear mostly looks like stuff you could get at any discount clothing store, but because of the label, people are willing to pay an order of magnitude more.

Or, to put it in other terms, they're Apple, but for clothes.

Yeah... "mock them for decades" over this? Give me a break. I barely care enough to mock them right now. In fact... nope. Not at all.

Now, batteries catching on fire? Apparently, that just never gets old.

The only people that should be embarrassed are the original brand owners of "Supreme". Supreme is a generic word. That's why it couldn't be protected in Italy against "Supreme Italy". If "Supreme" had won that case, there now would be a run on generic brand names like "Nice" or "Great".

So, what is the loophole? Because honestly, that sounds far more interesting to me.

Looks like it's as simple as an entprising group in Italy registered the trademark there before the American company realised or bothered with the rest of the world. (It's hardly a tricky trademark). Unfortunately for these people [nssmag.com], for many people "Supreme" is nothing more than a logo and a brand. That's it.

Supreme Italia, aka Supreme Barletta, seems to be a real company that simply bet the NYC company to the punch when it came to registering Futura Heavy Oblique White on a Red Box with the word Supreme within Italy. Presumably, the American firm has ignored them on the grounds that Italy isn't a major player in the streetwear scene, and they're wary of the Strisend effect and do not wish to draw attention to it.

It looks like it's limited to Italy only though.

    Anyone really know?

Are you sure? Maybe it's a sticker with a picture of a headphone jack.

If they are going into a fake Supreme store, may as well have fake ports too.

So, let me get this straight. The Samsung line of phone models end in a number, a plus sign, or the letter "S"...?

This is one time that I truly wish Apple would or could sue the shit out of them, for nothing more than lack of originality. I mean for FUCKS sake, why are they even paying people in the marketing and design department.

Who cares about a silly logo on an average quality yet overpriced shirt? Whether the holder of copyright in that shirt is from New York, Italy or China.

Sadly, it's a whole lot of people, and it's been going on for a long time. Since you can't copyright a clothing design meaningfully, but you can copyright a logo, there's long been a push to popularize logo Tees. Arguably, it was started by a combination of band tees, and Izod shirts with little alligators on them. Brands are associated with activities, and people buy the shirts to associate themselves with the brand.

Every time I see a "Supreme" logo on something, I just roll my eyes. Their shit is crap, or

  • Copyright and Trademark laws in Italy are very interesting, in that I don't think anybody there knows that they exist. And they're certainly not enforced.

If you've ever been to Italy and see an Italian school bus, and you have any concept of western copyright/trademark law, you'll instantly ask yourself when was the last time you saw a school bus painted with an array of Disney and Warner Bros. characters.

I imagine the intention is to portray that this Italian company has taken advantage of some weakness in an existing companies trade mark registration, which very well may be the case. A quick look on the web suggests the Italian outfit started off selling the products of the US company, before starting it's own product lines.

  • Of course USA is not above making fake brands.
That country ignored the real "Havana Club" rum and trademark (despite registration in USA by Cuba), and apparently there is a fake "Havana Club" rum manufactured in Puerto Rico only for sale in USA. USA went as far as make a special law, just for this trademark, so the fake is legal there.

Oh, and USA has fake Budweiser!

Seems to be a bit of hypocrisy in considering the other (legal) Supreme brand as a fake. Trademark law is complex and convoluted...

It's a strange world when you get mocked over some "real" abstract concept like "intellectual property".

Pretty sure the clothes are "real" and have a similar stupid logo on them. They probably have the same Indian or South American company manufacture the stuff.
