Rambo Tribble (1273454) writes In their ongoing effort to capitalize on local business, Amazon has unveiled a "VERY gradual expansion unless things go gangbusters," of their Amazon Local services, namely takeout food ordering in Seattle. Rivalling smaller, more focused firms in the space, it appears the online giant is trying to wrap recommendations, ordering, and payments in a convenient Amazon bundle. And to think, "word of mouth" used to involve actual mouths.

And then subsequently, Amazon will give you recommendations for other places.

Amazon tends to be tight lipped on they actually will make money on new things (and they like getting into new things) but I would guess
Delivery: Amazon is slowly / experientially pushing into delivering goods for the last mile. They are building out their delivery service for same day delivery of many goods. Here may be another way to squeeze value out of their delivery trucks.

There was a period in time where pretty much everyone in my group (including the student helpers) would order snacks, daily, from kozmo.com. The problem was they'd order them independently over a span of a few hours. So the delivery guy would have to make multiple trips to our building to deliver a candy bar, then a pint of Ben & Jerrys, then some licorice or a can of pop.
It really isn't a sustainable model when you have to send a guy out just to deliver a Snickers bar.

Well it's about time someone takes out Seattle. Ever since we legalized marijuana, Seattle has just been sitting in a cloud of smoke. I think a date with Amazon will provide the kick Seattle needs to break out of this pot haze and become a productive city of the USA again!

Bullshit. The liquor control board has not allowed a single store to open yet. Also, there are more laws, rules, and fines wrt marijuana than there were before this fake legalization so there have been many more arrests. Also, it is still illegally federally so it is still very hard to find. I have never even seen it in the Seattle area.
Then I propose that you are not in the Seattle area. Even before it was legal, I could run across people smoking it on the street twice a week while walking around doing my own business. Now it's about double that. Essentially, everybody who used to smoke pot still does and does so openly. Even before it was generally legal, there were green cards for the giving by sympathetic doctors and stuff being distributed by sympathetic green card holders. Most of the pot enforcement has been on the medical marijuana

I seriously doubt you've ever seen it in public here. I've lived here 42 years, and I have never seen marijuana in private, much less in public. It is still illegal to smoke in public even after this half-ass legalization attempt. In fact, this fake legalization effort has actually clarified the law on just how much more illegal it is now. The SPD will still ticket you. The ticket is only $27, but it certainly is illegal.
Born and raised in Seattle (45 years) and I can state for a fact that me & my friends have no problem smoking it outside, on the street. I pass by people almost every day on Capital Hill that are smoking since the decriminalization of it. Before that, I'd run into people smoking weed outside about once a week.
And I'm going to point out, if you've never seen anyone smoke marijuana in private, I'm not surprised you haven't seen anyone smoke it in public. You seem to have a very sheltered life, mainl

We don't care if smoking outside is illegal. We didn't care that smoking weed was illegal a year ago when we smoked it, we didn't care 20 years ago when we were smoking it. It didn't stop us. So thinking that saying it's illegal and you'll get ticketed by the Seattle Pigs is really pointless. We don't give a fuck. Either take a hit off that joint, or pass it.
Pretty much. The police went to great efforts to make sure that if anything happened, their role in legalization was clear, and that pretty much boiled down to that they don't have to give a damn. I think the point is that restaurants that already have delivery drivers (such as pizza parlors) may be more willing to outsource delivery to Amazon in order to not have to pay the higher minimum wage to the delivery people on their payroll.
