Exclusive GTA IV Content for PS3 Too 52

One of Microsoft's happy announcements at this year's E3 was exclusive content for Grand Theft Auto IV on the Xbox 360. Eurogamer is now reporting that the PS3 will get its own exclusive content for Rockstar's next chapter in the GTA series. From the article: "How many additional areas or episodes Rockstar is planning is anyone's guess at this juncture, but it seems the game is at least being structured to accommodate a number of expansive new content releases in the weeks and months after release, while also satisfying platform holder - and console owner - demand for exclusive material. Though with 'exclusive' being a somewhat elastic term these days, especially where Grand Theft Auto is concerned, we wouldn't be remotely surprised if you end up playing 'exclusive' 360 episodes on your PS3, and vice versa. One thing's for sure - there's nothing more certain to piss off the fanboys than a level playing field. "

You mean to kill ALL the hookers, I'm going to have to buy two consoles?!?! This is bullshit!

You don't have to BUY two consoles. Just kill someone who has both and take it from him.
    • Nope. But wait until you see how many Microsoft Points an hour alone with one will cost.
    • It's the Nintendo/Pokemon strategy applied to GTA! Coming soon: GTA Perl and Silver, each with their own exclusive populations of hookers. "Gotta beat 'em all!"

That doesnt mention what size the cars could be, since you could have a car that would be 1 cubic pixel but be like driving a cement slab at someone. That doesnt even deal with the details of mass object manipulation with a rocket, either.

I think its just like Soul Calibur II. On Wii, you can play as Link and steal chariots and horses. On XBox, you'll get Spawn who will get Seth McFairlane designed rides to steal. And on PS3, you'll get Heihachi Mishima who doesn't need to steel a car because he has grown out his righteous hair [wikipedia.org] into WINGS!

Since when have we ever had a level playing field? Every console has it's ups and it's down (from graphics to joypad config). Each one is rather unique in this way. So you will never find two consoles on a truely level playing field.
    • by DrXym ( 126579 )
Speaking of joypads, I wonder how long it will take for somebody to hack the PS3 & Wii controllers to work with other Bluetooth devices.

    • Honestly, I don't see that having sex in a game (while clothed no doubt) is a first, or pushing a huge boundary. The Leisure Suit Larry games featured sex as the main premise in the game.

And it saddens me to think that having sex is worse than killing a cop in this society.

The Hot Coffee thing was a media creation. They missed the boat initially on going after Rockstar. People have targeted violent video games for ages. This just gave them a new excuse, but the actual backlash that occurred was far from
      • Well, I'm sure that this has been said, but Rockstar didn't get in trouble for having sexual content; the problem was that they did not announce that such content existed on the game discs. Sure some user gained access to the content by unusual means (so I'm told) but it was still accessible and undeclared to the ESRB, which resulted in the backlash.

Anyone who's heard of the GTA series knows there is cop killing and hookers, but until the whole 'Hot Coffee' fiasco, I'm sure no one thought there was a min
        • The content did exist on the disc, but it could only be accessed via a mod to unlock it.

Most any game has content that is cut from release, and fairly often these orphaned data files still ship with a game.

I don't think you should be held accountable for something that can be only accessed via third-party tools, or added to a game after release by third parties.

Hell, there are nude sprite patches for Super Mario Bros.

I agree, and the thing that I always found so freaking amusing about this was that the only way to unlock this material was to go on the internet, in the case of a child presumeably unsupervised, and download the patch to apply to the game.

Oh noes!!! You mean there is a way for a child to see nudity if he goes onto the internet without adult supervisi

It only makes sense that with all of the consoles offer online downloads of game content, any cross platform game is going to eventually have all content on all platforms. After all, they loose money not doing so and frankly I think gamers would be more pissed to see content withheld for no reason. Would anyone really be happy if the new Obvlivion quest were only for the PS3 instead of being made availiable to all platforms?

Gamers should rejoice that at last we are seeing the end of exclusive game content for different platforms, it was just rediculous to do this.

"Fanboys" will still have plenty of other things to fight about, like Halo vs. whatever. Meanwhile us gamers can enjoy games to a fuller extent.
    • it's not a bad thing because if you develop a game just for one console you can use all the power of the console instead if you make a game for all platform you have to make a mid-quality game because you can't spend money and time on bettering the game on all platform

I don't think this marks the end of exclusive content for different platforms. It marks the beginning of exclusive content for each of the game platforms.

And yes, it is ridiculous to buy 2-3 different copies of the same game because there are extra levels or features in each of them. But it's also ridiculous to buy the same movie over and over again on DVD (think "special edition", "ultimate edition", "remastered").

It used to be that if you wanted to play any game you merely had to purchase every console. Yes, it was expensive but we did it for the exclusive games that were only available on a single system.

Now they are trying to make it so that if you want to play every bit of a cross platform game you have to buy multiple copies? Screw that. When Soul Calibur II came out with exclusive characters on each system, I responded by not buying the damn game. Here it looks like Rockstar is trying to generate artificial demand for downloadable content; something else designed to extract money from gamers.

Yea, yea, feed me the line about games costing so much money to produce now. I don't care. Movies cost several million dollars to produce and you can buy the DVD for a single Andrew Jackson. Gamers are being charged three times that much for something that only cost a fraction of the price. Yes I understand that there are other factors here... I'm not that dense, it's just that they don't need to nickel-and-dime us afterwards.

I'm tired of companies raising prices [gametrailers.com] and then charging more for the "privelidge" of playing online [xbox.com]. I'm tired of companies cramming questionable tech [blu-ray.com] down our throats that only raises cost and causes delays [betanews.com]. I'm tired of games that are strictly service based [worldofwarcraft.com] even though you still have to pay full retail price. I'm tired of companies charging me yet again [wikipedia.org] for games that I already own; I mean I already have two [gamefaqs.com] copies [gamefaqs.com] of Super Mario World, two [gamefaqs.com] copies [gamefaqs.com] of Super Mario 64, and three [gamefaqs.com] fricking [gamefaqs.com] copies [gamefaqs.com] of The Legend of Zelda and for only 23 more dollars, I can play them all on one console. Hooray for shovelware.

Yes I'm ranting. Sorry about that. The whole thing just makes me wonder why I play games anymore. Can I at least get an "amen"?
    • by Wordplay ( 54438 )
No amen from me. As far as I'm concerned, tightly integrated online is the current killer feature in gaming consoles. Prior to that, I'd never consider not gaming on my home PC. Now I'm considering buying a Mac for my next box.

I agree with you on questionable tech, but nobody's forcing you to buy the PS3, and they're not doing you a disservice by delaying it. They're arguably doing themselves a disservice by not putting it out there for you to buy, but it's not like they owe you.

Or you could have done what I did: Buy the game for the console of your choice, and not give a rats ass about the exclusive characters. Same with "exclusive content" for GTA. Who cares? If the main game + whetever content you get for your console is fun, then it's fun. Why would you need to go and beat another version of the game? Besides, much like the exclusive Soul Calibur character, the
    • Was DVD questionable tech when Sony "shoved it down our throats"? Lord knows it was an immature technology that gave them tons of problems. I'm betting that two years down the road the Xbox360 will be dammed sorry that its developers have neither a next gen drive or a hard drive to work with since neither are standard features for the system.

Well said! I bought a couple of the classic games for GBA because I liked the games enough to want to play them years after I moved on from the older console. Nothing forced me to get rid of my old console. I am happy - even grateful - that Nintendo recognized there was a market for their older games ported/updated/emulated on newer systems.
